My cat's first kill
    #8757575 - 08/11/08 10:58 AM (15 years, 8 months ago)

I know this is a random pet story, but I figured the pub would be up for it.

So I have two cats who I unfortunately have to keep as indoor cats because I live in an apartment.

I have one who is very feisty and would love to fancy herself a fierce hunter, she is always killing bugs when they fly in and I can't wait for the day I have a backyard for her to play in.

The other one is half siamese and the exact opposite of her.  He has all the Siamese traits, he is loud, he is very attached to humans, and would rather sit on someone's lap than do anything.  He has had opportunity to go outside but shows no interest.  He is quite content as an indoor cat.

Recently I moved apartments and I now have enjoyment of a beautiful fourth floor balcony.  It's roomy for an apartment balcony and has a gorgeous view of the river.  Both my cats enjoy it immensely, the first one will spend hours out there watching the birds and enjoying the bugs and the outside air.  The other cat mostly goes out there when we are out there, or if he just wants to lie in the sun.

The balcony below us has a bunch of bird feeders and the birds love tormenting the cats.  Mostly they just run from one end of the balcony to the other watching them, but apparently not today.  Today I get home and the first cat, the hunter one is super excited.  I turned on the light and knelt down to give her a pet and there is a dead woodpecker in my kitchen.  I was naturally surprised and then I turned around and my siamese cat shows up on the scene...covered in feathers, and looking smug as...well you know how smug cats can look.

So my innocent and cuddly "lap cat" as my girlfriend calls him turns out to be a vicious hunter who can take down Woodpeckers off a small fourth floor balcony.  My other cat, the so called hunter is now incredibly wound up and tried to bat around the corpse to make it look as if she were the one who caught it.

Lots of excitement for my humble apartment cats.  My girlfriend is going to be shocked.  You may not care, but I thought this was a good pub story.  Sorry I don't have any pics, my girlfriend is between cameras at the moment, but it is a fairly sizeable woodpecker.

I love watching cats play. Every movement they make is calculated, and they are super serious when you give them somthing to chase.

Super dooper. My cat enjoys the hunt more than the kill it seems. She loves to bring live animals to me. Show them to me, then run away from me and rip their heads off. She's so cute.

I'm still waiting for her to bring me a bunny. Haven't gotten one of those.

A squirrel would do though. She's mostly a small game hunter.

Siamese cats really have that killer instinct.  I guess all cats do but siamese are really good at killing.

My grandmother had a big loud siamese cat. He was annoying. When he was thirsty he would stand on the kitchen counter and meow until you turned on the faucet for him and he drank right from there.

He spent most of the time outside though.  When my grandmother died we cleaned out the garage and there were a good seven or eight squirrel tails in there. Just the tails. He almost took down a seagull once and often chased wild turkeys and loose dogs out of the yard.  We just let him go after the house got sold.  He was better off on his own.

Yeah it's funny how they are.

Like I said, my non-siamese is always watching after the birds, going nuts after any bug gets in the house, playing hunter etc.  The siamese guy just likes to yowl and sit on people's lap, never ever showed any signs of even wanting to hunt.  When he plays with the cat toys he looks like he doesn't know how.  We always joked that he didn't know how to be a cat.  Naturally when I found the bird he was not my first guess, till I saw all the feathers sticking out of his mouth.

Too funny, it was even funnier that the other cat was trying to pass it off as her own.  They had the bird right by the door so it would be the first thing I saw when I walked in, I gave them both some cat treats after I threw the bird off the balcony.  I figured I owed them.

yeah I find a dead bird in the house about once a month,
crazy part is about once a year the bird is still alive, and
I come home to a wild bird flying around my house..

somewhat related story...I'm taking a nap and hear this
fluttering in the other room, my cat is bringing in moths
all the time to fuck with until she eventually kills them.
So as I am becoming more conscious, I realize that it's
not a moth but a bird..

So I open the front door and am trying to shoo the bird
out, but it's not co-operating, and I finally lose track of the
bird..so I say fuck it and get back on the internet..

Later, I call for a pizza...the pizza dude shows up, I open
the door, and this bird goes screaming past our heads.

You should have seen the look on his face, I told him the
story, we had some laughs and I got my pizza.  The only
crappy part was having to clean the bird shit out of my
kitchen later.

True dat....
The last time I let my cat out on the balcony, a bird flew close, and I knew what was going to happen, and things started to go in slow motion....
If the timing would have been any different, he would have dove, but I got a good firm grim on his tail before he was air-born....
Wwwwwhhheeeeewwww....
