a chapter for the history books
    #876146 - 09/11/02 02:35 AM (14 years, 7 months ago)

I think it will be neat in a few millenia or so (if humans are still around), that concoctions such as this bulletin board may be looked at as when open minds first began to rally together and build hopes for some sort of global peace. (i mean, thats what we're all after in the long run isnt it?)

maybe we will be looked at as pioneers for a free thinking world...

not that it hasnt been pondered and discussed in history, but with this age of communication the concept seems to be put in a new light..

I too always wonder what the history books will say about our time, and I desperately hope that we are nearing a turning point in our evolution. However, we are far from the first people to have a plan for world peace. They took things pretty far in the 60's and we all know that didn't pan out as expected. I imagine as soon as humans were able to think we understood the fact that war and destruction is horrible and we'd be much better off living in harmony, but its much harder to do in practice than in word apparently. I think we have a lot more violence ahead of us before we are finally able to iron out all our differences, if indeed it will ever happen.

They took things pretty far in the 60's and we all know that didn't pan out as expected.

I think that the "hippy era" was a necessary step forward in raising the consciousness of the human race. It may not have worked exactly like the idealistic predictions of many living in those times, but who is to say that these ideals are still not possible in the future? Humanity's addiction to materialism is a big problem and will not be something that disappears in a matter of a few decades, in my opinion.

I do think that the radical open-mindedness of that era has seemed to have a far-reaching effect on our human consciousness. (For instance, I think my own mom turned out a lot more open-minded just for being born during it)

Yay for flower children!

Yeah I actually agree. If it were not for the hippies, the whole new age movement and the interest in Eastern philosophy and spirituality that is growing today would probably not exist.

However, my point is that its all a zero sum game. Sure, there are a lot more awakened people today that are living out ideals that would lead to a harmonious society, but there are just as many people who are so hopelessly caught up in materialism and pointless pursuits that it doesn't matter. As a culture we are little if any further along than we were decades or centuries ago.

I'm not saying change is impossible, only that we still have a long hard road to travel that will undoubtedly take a lot longer than we'd hope for.
