Whats the diffrence between an externally and internally tracked torrent?
    #8759344 - 08/11/08 05:39 PM (15 years, 9 months ago)

By internal I mean tracked by the private site its downloaded from. I see quite a few torrents marked as external there and Ive been told to avoid those because they are marked for a reason. Im wondering what makes these torrents more susceptible to tracking vs an 'internal' torrent?

The only difference between the two that I'm aware of is that one torrent originated from the site you're downloading from and the other didn't. Example: Demonoid has torrent X that user is sharing via their tracker. Demonoid also has torrent Y that user is sharing, but the torrent originated from say piratebay.com.

The external torrent is still being seeded by Demonoid users in this case since the user is posting it on the site, but the amount of seeds/leachers is not accurately tracked. Demonoid can only track the amount of seeds to leechers since the torrent was uploaded based on the reporting of the original data submitted from the use of its members. This information will be inaccurate because ALL the data is truly only being tracked by the originating tracker in which the torrent started, not the site you found the torrent (if external).

Does that help?

Yes it does, I was concerned about downloading external torrents for safety concerns but it appears it really doesnt matter although several people have told me to never download an external torrent.
Thanks, Ive had my eyes on quite a few rarer externally tracked torrents that just may come my way.

i got caught downloading a torrent that was from a private tracker on a private site.  Private or not doesn't mean jack shit, was also running pg2 and using ipfilter.dat.  They didn't do anything other than an email, but still, they did find out.

usenet FTW

peace

Live outside of the US for even more FTW.  My ISP throws DMCA notices in the trash.  You would think US law firms would know that US law does not extend to the entire world.

Better than that, you would think the clients no better than to higher US attorneys to deal with non-us issues.

Do they actually throw away DMCA notices or just the "nah nah we caught you" notices that seem so common?

If the former, thats pretty cool, though I could understand copyright owners' frustration.

At least in the states, it seems its better to self regulate to prevent bullshit legislation being imposed.

That is what one of my friends that works for my ISP told me.  We were talking about it when Oink when under.  He said our local courts don't care about copyrights from rich countries like the US, thought they will protect local artists, and that they (the ISP) toss DCMA notices in the trash.  I was a bit surprised, but it makes sense.  (The country I live in is smaller than the city I grew up in... both in area and population.)
