Dark Rye Flour Too Mushy HELP ME

Wassup everyone I read up on the use of DRF on these boards and seemed very interesting and decided to give it a try myself
When I mixed the substrate (I did BRF before) so I just substituted BRF for DRF and mixed as usual but the substrate ending up being all gooey and mushy and nothing like BRF substrate I did my previous outing which was airy and easy to pack into the jars. I also read a post that someone else was having the same problem
so is DRF just hype? or have people just innoculated into the gooey substrate?
Please let me know

The exact same thing happened to me, i ended up throwing out a whole bowl of substrate. I was using the 2 2/3 c DRF, 2 2/3 c water, and 8 cups water recipe for 12 jars. I put the vermiculite in the bowl and added 2 cups water and mixed that well, then added the flour slowly, and then added a little more water slowly. Probably 2 1/4 cups altogether. mixed that really well, and it seems to end up like oatmeal no matter what.
I decided to use it anyway, and have innoculated. This was two days ago and the barest beginnings of colonization have begun.
Good luck

That was exactly the word I was looking for oatmeal like
I am going to go ahead and innoculate as well and hope for the best since the substrate was all oatmeal like I tried my best to evenly distribute it throughout the jar and hope it works out
Let me know how it goes will take pics and post

I know exactly what you're talking about. I used those ratios and got the same result, a really sticky mush. What I did was kind of scrape the top of the mush in the bowl with the edge of a big spoon. The substrate that had been scraped into the spoon in the process was a little bit more airy and worked well in jars. Of course, I don't think that it really matters either way. Possibly a jar with more compacted and sticky substrate would take a little bit longer to colonize.. Good luck with your jars.

Eww.. That's no good. I got mine from the bulk section of a health food store, so at least I had the advantage of being able to see the flour in a plastic bag before I used it. I never saw any maggots, but then again I didn't really pay much attention. Were they live maggots? I guess it probably wouldn't hurt to have a maggot in your substrate after you sterilized it anyway.. Regardless, I switched over to spawn bags sealed with an iron of hard wheat berries. It's much less hassle than dealing with those damn jars.

As far as I`m concerned BRF can`t hold a candle to Dark rye flour as far as colonization times. I`ve had jars side by side of BRF & DRF... and The Dark rye jars kicked their asses. I`ve had 1/2 pints show signs of germination in 48 hours and reach 100% colonization in 7 days. Keep experimenting with a little less water and maybe a dash more verm.

Yeah, these maggots were definitely alive, moving around and stuff!!! They weren't in the flour before hand, but after being sterilized, and innoculated, they showed up about a week or two later!!! Freakin disgustin!!!

Hey Numba 9 what were your measurments for the jars you used
I tried the DRF numerous times and was not satisified with the way the substrate showed up too oatmeal like and heard lots of good things and want to jump on the bandwagon as well but would like the right measurments if possible
