WTF?!?! I grew this in my shed...
    #875819 - 09/10/02 09:26 PM (21 years, 6 months ago)

I found this last night. It seems to have grown out of my alder chip bag. The roll of black material is roofing felt. I was astonished when I found it. Take a look for yourself.

Objects surface

Objects underside where it was in contact w/ plastic bag.

A cross section of the object.

I just noticed it last night. I could have been growing for weeks. The wierd thing is, I searched for the mycelial network in the bag of woodchips and found nothing. The chips were a bit moist, but no real sign of fungi.

Can I have a spore print?

That is really wierd;  It looks a lot like some misshapen polypore, but that rainbow coloring surrounding it. . .might be a combination of things?

Congratulations.  I think

Nice photos.

It looks like Dry Rot (Serpula lacrimans) which is actually pretty common. It causes a lot of damage to houses and other structures made of wood. It tends to grow in out of the way places, which is why it often isn't noticed.

If you take notice it is very dry to the touch and crumbles like styrene. I really don't know the genus but it is not good for you to take into your lungs especially if you have an allergy for it. I seen this same shit growing on block walls and many other materials. It is very agressive and will take over other living mushrooms quickly. It does remind me of a trich or a pennicillium. Be careful handling it. Mask and gloves would be the safe way. DO NOT take it inside your house with your other mushies.
I had a patch of oysters that were wiped out from this fungus. ITS A KILLER!

RIP Matt, your friendship and your contributions to the world of fungi will be missed. Unfortunately we never got to hunt together.

I have seen that fungus many times before. Hell I got a large batch of it growing on top of last week's "left-overs" in my kitchen right now. :smirk:

This might sound crazy & gross... but I bet that chewing tobbacco juice would kill it as well .

I once seen a red neck hick hold a wild lizard's on the ground with his shoe as he spit tobbacco juice on it... That poor lizard was dead within 5 minutes!!

This site recommends using Boric Acid to kill wood-rotting fungi.
