Oysters from buried books in yard.

I went to check out my reishi grow this weekend and to my surprise I found some oysters fruiting in front of the hut. I buried some colonized books there a month ago, about 4 of them. Here are some pics.

impressive surprise!
How did you noc up the books? with LC or pockets of spawn in hollowed out areas?

I'm surprised you didn't give them any covering (mulch or the sort) to keep humidity up.
Nice bouquets.

That's a pleasant surprise. Interesting it took them 4 months to fruit.

I used the books to hold down the straw in the barrel when I pasteurized. Then I stuffed the pages (about every 50 pages) with rye spawn. I wouldn't sterilize. Doesn't work very well.
Stuff them with spawn and place in a bag. Punch holes in the bags for air and they colonize in about a week to a week and a half.

Do you know if the inks used in books are toxic?

Most are soy based now. You can call the publisher listed in the beginning of the book to find out. I wouldn't worry about it too much. I have called one publisher and confirmed it and also found information about my local newspaper on the net. They use soy as well. I would imagine most follow in the footsteps of others.

Depends on how you cook them.

I have been wanting to fry them up with beer batter and make a light dipping sauce for them.

sorry about the hijack.
Lipa, What strain are those? And I'm curious, which books were selected as prime candidates for "other uses"? I know I've got some "classical literature" titles that deserve to be used in this manner- at least I'll get some value out of those books.

Juke this is how I want to prepare them. I saw this recipe a while back, but never got around to preparing it. It sounds good!

The books are from a lawyers office. They are last years law ordinance books. They are thicker than phone books. A few of them were phone books though. I just use out of date books.
