so, my computer keeps shutting off randomly after a few minutes, unless i keep it in a very cold room with the ac on. i think that the fan on the laptop has gone out, as it does not seem to ever turn on anyomre....
so, a question for those of you that know about these things, do you think that the fan could be the problem, and do you think that it would be very hard for me to replace?

Yea it certainly could be the problem, and they are generally easy to replace.

so, i went ahead and pulled the thing apart, broke 2 screws that mounted the keyboard togeather, but as you can see it still works turns out there was a massive amount of lint keeping the thing from turning, after i pulled it out and blew out the dust it worked fine !

Yeah I was gonna say, laptops need to be cleaned regularly, every year or so, or else the heat dissipation suffers. Sometimes this is a much bigger job than it should be due to an overuse of screws (HP) or screws that require a special screwdriver (Compaq).
Anyway, great that you fixed your problem!

hp and compaq are the same company, and a lot of times use the same shells.
I had to replace the fan in my old hp laptop one time, and i couldn't just buy the fan because the only place i could get it was directly from HP for $80, for a damn small ass piece of plastic. I bought the entire heatsink assembly for $15 on ebay. And zouden is right, there were a shitload of screws in that bad boy.

> due to an overuse of screws (HP) or screws that require a special screwdriver (Compaq).
You should take apart an old Apple iBook if you want to see overuse of screws. Special screwdriver? If you mean torx driver... I guess... not really that special and are certainly used on more than just compaq laptops.
> hp and compaq are the same company
They may be the same company on the outside, but on the inside, the parts are still "red" (compaq) and "blue" (hp). Years ago they talked about "purple parts" that would be the result of the merger, but this still has not happened.
What is really interesting is the difference in part prices. A keyboard for an HP laptop might run $120 for the part. The exact same keyboard, with a red (compaq) part number, will run $34. (The colors are figurative, used to describe what side of the company the parts come from, not literal as in the color of ink used.)

Yeah, torx driver, and they aren't that uncommon but it's not the sort of thing my dad had in his toolset when I was trying to fix his laptop. And the local hardware store didn't stock the little T8 driver! Major pain in the ass.

Radio Shack (bleck) usually has them.
I've got the "compaq tool" (p/n 161946-001) which can take apart pretty much anything (other than racks) that Compaq ever put out.
