Help bypassing WindowsXp Pro Startup Password.....
    #8752248 - 08/10/08 10:05 AM (15 years, 9 months ago)

I recently bought a Dell Latitude laptop running XP Pro because the owner was moving. Now he's gone & failed to mention he uses a startup password or a SmartCard to login to windows, and now there's no way for me to get ahold of him.

I startup & get the "Insert card or press 'Ctrl+Alt+Del' to begin". ctrl+alt+del just brings up the standard login.

Ive tried the F8/safemode thing to no avail.

...any recommendations? Ive been trying to find a program to load on cd/dvd & startup running the disk drive (instead of internal HD) to get past this shit. Or maybe theres a smartcard or something i could use, i dunno.

Anyone got ANY recommendations???
Thank you!!!

You could try: http://www.knoppix.net/

Boot in Knoppix, recover whatever data you want, and then reinstall windows or switch to http://www.ubuntu.com/ or another linux distro (which are free) if you don't have a licensed copy of windows and don't want to pay for it.

I'm also pretty sure if you did some googling you could find some password crackers.  I'm sure there are other people that know far more about this stuff than I do so I'll leave it to the pros.. good luck

i would run my ubuntu (or kubuntu), but i cant load em without access to the disk drive (dont know what program/extsension to run). But im probably just gonna get a Student Version of Windows Xp via Torrent if i need to completely reload.

there must be a file you could just delete that would get rid of the password screen

Reset the admin password with this and you should be good to go unless he has 'require smart card' enabled for interactive logins. In that case I dunno, I've never really dealt much with smart cards.

You can always try pressing ctrl-alt-delete twice and logging in as Administrator with no password. Default security ftl!

LM hashes of passwords are stored in the SAM file in \windows\system32\config. If the drive is not encrypted then you can easily recover (in a couple of minutes or hours), or instantly reset, the administrator (or any other user) password with specific software which read the SAM file. Recovering is often desirable if you have encrypted folders.

Have a look here http://www.petri.co.il/forgot_administrator_password.htm

Use tweak ui, you can set it to automatically log you in as whatever username you want.
