fine ground verm + BRF:

hey guys, how long approximately would a FINE GROUND verm + BRF combination extend colonization time for half-pint canning jars. Rather than look harder for coarse ground verm, could I use non-ground brown rice? if so, which brand is optimal? what else will work to create less dense cakes if i cant find the brown rice?

just follow the tek.. lol.. coarse verm and BR flour.. if you want faster colonization times consider inoculating using grain, LC, or use quart grain jars so you can shake a grain.. if the pf jars are prepped right, then they will grow pretty quick.. alot of your waiting will be for the spores to germinate, then they grow pretty fast after that...

There was a thing done on here where fine ground showed better/faster results. It could have been due to conditions, but I still choose to use fine.

I used fine ground, and so far so good...i also think someone said fine holds more water, but coarse was easier as far as contamination possibility goes

What?? how?? lol..
what you put in doesnt matter.. if you got a contam after you sterilized it, then you sterilized it wrong, or you introduced a contam when you inoculated the jar...

I guess my words weren't ordered well...i barely pulled my FIRST harvest today so i havent had contam problem yet, beside NINJA TEK...what i was saying was that i was told that the finer grade vermiculite holds more water because there is more surface area, and that the coarser vermiculite is more forgiving as far as contam, like its easier to contam fine grade as opposed to coarse grade...ya dig?
how??i dont know i was just relaying the info i was given on the same issue

Fine verm holds more water for a given volume of vermiculite. That is true. Course or fine doesn't effect contamination rates, other than when using it as a filter on brf tek jars. In that case, fine verm does a better job of filtering.
Course verm has a place in casing layers because the larger chunks create little air pockets that tend to stimulate primordia formation. RR

Fine vermiculite IMO is the best type of vermiculite for all applications, substrates, casings, dunk and roll, etc.
