Myco grow Bag from Sporeworks log *completed*
    #875136 - 09/10/02 05:24 PM (19 years, 11 days ago)

Spores: 1 syringe of P. cubensis, Treasure Coast strain ordered from sporeworks.
Spawn: 3 Myco Environment bags from Sporworks

Sterilization procedure: My cat soaked a paper towel in 70%(has better antiseptic properties than 90% or 91% isopropyl alcohol) isopropyl(rubbing) alcohol.  Wiped down the injection site and let it dry.  My cat then took the alcohol doused paper towel and put it over the injection site.  My cat also wiped down the needle with alcohol and used a butane lighter to sterilize the tip of the needle.

Innoculation procedure:
He stuck the needle through the paper towel and into the injection at a steep angle so he could see the needle through the bag, and injected about 2.5 cc?s all around the area of the injector site.  He did this to all three bags.

Incubation:
He had 5 collapsed cardboard boxes stacked in a pile with a reptile heater under it in a closable cabinet.  The reptile heater is extremely hot, about 120 degrees so to spread out the heat the boxes are used.  He had a thermometer on top of the boxes with one bag on top of the thermometer and the rest are around it.  The temperature is a constant 86 degrees.

September 3: Bags innoculated and put on top of the boxes.

September 9: first signs of mycelium arising near the injection site.

It?s kind of hard to tell, but the white mycelium is visible next to the brown substrate.

September 10: more mycelium growth, but nothing exciting yet, he?ll keep you posted with more pictures later.

9/12 Updated pics.

This one has started to spread left and right.

Slowly but surely.

He don?t think this one has budged, any ideas on how to speed up the spread on this one?  This one is in the same exact environment the other are in, this doesn?t make any sense.

9/19 update:
That one bag that was really dry has been injected with lots of water and reinocculated because it wasn?t going anywhere.  The other two bags are spreading well.  He has broken up the mycelium and spread them throughout the bag.

Not to be nosy but what was the shipping time on what you bought?
I am wondering because i got virtually the same thing, and am waiting still.....
otherwise, looking good!
The only possible comment might to put a little bit more between the heat and bags to keep the temp measured in the low 80s-higher 70s

Well it took about a day for sporeworks to process the order, and another 2 to ship the order, and another 5 for UPS to finally deliver it. My cat would have rather gone with USPS than UPS. As for the temperature, I'm going to have to say that I'm going to leave the temperature as it is. He has heard that a high 70's and low 80's is good.....for growing mushrooms, not mycelium. He will remove the heating pad when the bag is fully colonized.

Well I have had more contams at higher temps, my experiance with it at least, i am aware the recommended temps are from 84-86 but if air temp is 86 its no guarentee that the substrate isnt past 90, you know? Ive just had many bad experiance of cooking jars to death, thinking they were mid 80s, maybe your setup is better.
....i live in canada, maybe thats why its taken so long

The temperature between the top of the box and the bottom of the bag is 86, he moved the temperature monitor up and it's about 81 at the top of the substrate, it's going to be fine, hes not going to kill off the mycelium

One thing you could do is wait another day or so then massage the mycelium into the spawn so it spreads it around.  This will dramatically speed it up.

Ok, he thinks he'll try that. He was going to break up the mycelium all around so it would spread through the entire bag, but my jars didn't take nearly this long, which made me wonder. Thanks. He wants to know if anyone else have any suggestions?

One thing you can deffinatelly do is to stop taking photos and checking on the bags everyday.
It`s a BAD thing.

Just a quick update, the first two bags that were actually spreading are doing well. The 3rd bag that didn't show any changes is still the exact same. He looked at the bags that were doing well and there was droplets of water on the side of the bag telling me that it was nice and wet inside. The bag that wasn't growing was dry as a bone, no signs of any liquid water anywhere. He doesn't know what he's going to do about the third bag.

9-24, One bag has fully colonized and has started to pin. WHEE! The other bags's colonization status is 50%, 3%, 0%.

He thinks it might have started to pin, but now that he looked at it some more, it doesn?t look like it. It looks like it?s only the rye. Well he decided to cold shock it to make sure that the pins are growing, but while I?m at it, he might as well dunk it.

Didn?t know the cake floats.

His other bag has fully colonized. Here's both of them next to each other.

The one on the right has been dunked, notice the more flufflyness of th mycelium.

After reading that beer was good for shrooms, he decided to dunk one bag in a beer/water/hydrogen peroxide solution. he used Michelob Amber Bock. he nuked the beer in the the microwave to burn off the CO2 and the alcohol.

Christ! I ordered my myco bag from Sporebank and innoculated it on 9/18. I still haven't seen any activity in there.
I started some jars on the 23rd and they've been doing great.

My cat says you probably didn't innoculate them right. Just innoculate them like you do with the cakes, on the very edge of the substrate, not directly into the center of the substrate.

yeah, my cat did the same thing as you did and nothing grew. Re-innoculated it and it works fine, just make sure everything is clean and sterile.

10-5 update
The bag that he dunked still shows no signs of pins or anything. Been cold shocked, and it's only gotten fluffy. He doesn't understand why. However, the bag that he dunked with the beer, he cased it using Moe's Flower Pot Tek, and you can now see the mycelium come through.

10-12 Update, bag still getting 12 hours of light a day, but no pins. Still waiting for something to happen. Anyone have any suggestions?
As for the flower pot, the mycelium wasn't spreading much afterwards, and decided to take off some of the compost on top, think he may have put it on too thick, and then growth exploded.

10-18 Update. He put a layer of coco coir on top of the fully colonized compost. It has only been 30 hours and it growth looks good. My bag has finally showed some pins, except it's growing off the rhizomorphic mycelium on the bag, not directly off the substrate? He hopes they grow big, but it looks like it's going slow, anyone have any suggestions on how to get it to pin on the substrate? Here's a pic of the coco coir.

10-19 update.
Pins are appearing more on the cakes. He's still having the problem with it growing off the bags and the edges. Didn't want it to get smashed between the bag and the substrate, he decided to move it to a terrarium. he know the picture is crappy, he'll take a better one later. The mycelium pealed off the bag. It seems to be pretty strong so he didn't rip it off and put it on the cake...but it looks stupid right now. he just wish I could get more pins off the actual substrate.

As for his flower pot, the coco coir is about 40% colonized.

He decided to take some pictures, it's at the picture forum. Mycobag mushrooms

When things are too wet, mycelium wil not grow. It looks like you have a little too much moisture in your substrate.

Yeah your right, the mycelium seems to be shiny. Should he just fan it a lot to remove excess moisture? but would it dry out the mushrooms too or not?

Wait a minute....he doesn't have a problem with mycelium growth. It's been fully colonized for a few weeks, he's just having problems forming in the wrong place.

And mindtrap your friend had the same problem as in the pins were forming on the side, or a mycelium growh problem?

He experimented. If you read above it says why he moved it out of the bag because it might have lowered my yields. Also if you have ever seen a picture of mycobag, it's basically rye and vermiculite in a bag. the substrate is already cube shaped.

Yea that makes since about the yields. i probably would have just broken it up and spread it out. I have never seen pics of fully colonized mycobags, i just got my bags in the mail, i am to lazy to start them. I have been reading about them, and i dont think i have ever heard anyone's colonize as fast as yours. fully colonized in a month right?? dayum. can't wait to see finals!

Your only partially right, according to dictionary.com, sware was once the past tense of swear, but it's archaic.
10/24 Update
All mushrooms have been harvest on the cake. Being dunked right now. The harvest pictures can be seen by following the link a few posts up(10/20/02 05:19 AM). The casing is doing well. It is now 100% colonized. Time to wait for pins.

Here comes the 2nd flush. He dunked the cake for about 15 hours.

Here's a picture of my casing. The coco coir has fully colonized and has started to pin.

It's kind of hard to see, but they're really small right now. He's having the problem he had with the 1st flush in the bag. It's fruiting again on the edges, off the rhizomorphic growth, not in the center of the substrate. All pins are on the edge. No pins are to be found any where else. What is my problem? Anyone have any solutions?

11-3 Update.

Here's how his casing looks so far.

Here they are about 8 hours later.

here's 3/4 of the casing harvest. It already weighs over 200 grams wet.

This is his 2nd flush off his cake. Some of it dried, some wet. He'll post up weights tomorrow.

thanks. Here's the last 1/4, actually it's more like 1/3. This was just a lil over 106 grams. Add that to the other 2/3 I got from the day before, over 300 grams wet from the 1st flush, not too bad.

Also there are a bunch of pictures missing like my cake harvest, they are all here.

Here are his weights so far.

Flush #2: 9.8 grams dry.
Casing
Flush #1: 21.0 grams dry.

Nice going daussaulit!
I just got my first myco-bag today along with a mazatapec syringe I can't wait to start this growing stuff,it's always fun looking at grow logs and see basicly nothing turn into a shitload of something!I have a digital camera so I may also start a grow log but I need to get the bag started before that!
Hey daussaulit, how long did it take to see your first pins on you first flush, like at what day after you injected the bags and stuff just cuorios.
Thanks!

11-12 Update
His cake flush is over, for the 3rd flush he got 6.2 grams dry.
His casing has recovered, it's not being put under the light again to initiate pinning, he hopes to get a good 2nd flush.

>how long did it take to see your first pins on you first flush, like at what day after you injected the bags.
This is a grow log, everything is dated, scroll up to find out.

11-19 update.
My casing wasn't quite ready and when he misted it, the coco coir expanded more. He put it back in a dark place again to let it colonize more and then he put it under light. It's growing well. This is only a picture of a section, it looks like this around all the edges.

He dunked my cake and he flipped it upside down because the top half shrunk a lot. He thinks all the nutrients got sucked out of it. Right now it's pinning alot, maybe my 4th flush will be even bigger than my 3rd flush. He sees a lot more pins. He thought it was dead because the bowl formed a ring of ice around the edges when he put it in the fridge to dunk it, but it was apparently too cold. He's glad it's fairly resiliant and can take some frigid temps.

4th flush for my cake, 2nd flush for my casing.

what do you mean by dunk your cake?
There's a picture of it a few posts up, you may have to change pages to see it. For more information about the dunking itself, check out this link:FAQ

11-21 update.
Wow, the growth seems to be a lot more impressive than my 1st flush. He did change up my technique. He started misting everyday. He made a bubbler system and it's on about 30 minutes 5-6 times a day. He also switched from a 12/12 lightning schedule to a 3on, 21 off. the growth it definitely a ton faster.
This is about 52 hours after my last pictures.

He's already had to harvest one.

11-23 update.
Patched the holes in the casing with coco coir and then covered it in another layer. The cake is going strong. He just harvested off 88.5 grams wet.
He'll post the dry weight as soon as they're fully dried.

He's back at home, and he's left my casing and the terrarium in complete darkness, hopefully nothing will happen to then for the next 4 weeks, and then he can begin my flush when I get back to school. There won't be any updates until 5-6 weeks from now.

1/14 update.
Well he's not so sure my casing is still alive anymore. It's doing something weird and has dried out a little. He's not giving up hope yet, so he'll see if it'll still do anything. My cake also has dried out but he is now about to finish dunking to rehydrate it. The cake looks nice and healthy. It did grow something though. Its a really weird looking mushroom. It's curved around, and the cap of the mushrooms is about the size of a small bead.

1/21 update
He thinks his casing is officially dead. There has been no growth and there's this weird smell. On other other hand my cake is getting fuzzy again so it should be going on flush #5 soon. He also looked into those saran quickcovers, it works soo much better than the other setup he had.

Before.

After.

And yes those are different pots, one is the original TC cake, the other is a KS cake that has been sitting in the bag fully colonized for over 2 months because he didn't have time to birth it until now. Not really mentioned anywhere, but he'll add it in to this log.

its the color of the container that is in, it makes it look kinda unhealthy. Here's another updated picture. As for my Koh Samui cake hasn't pinned yet, still waiting. He'll get a non-birds eye view picture next time.

Those cakes almost look as good as the one in the picture under your name, nice flush.
I have a treasure coast colonizing right now and thought I read that they are pretty good size shrooms, but yours look perfect, not to big and not to small, just right!
Have you tried these treasure coast yet,I am just wondering how they work out for you, can't wait for mine.
Great job man!

yeah, the TC are ok. He said that he's had more potent.
2/2 update
He used a honey dunk. He searched around and people were saying it might bring contams, but after 5 flushes, its near the last leg for that cake and he'll try anything to prolong the life of the cake, so he'll try it out. if it dies, oh well. It's sitting in a 13:2:1 solution of water, honey, H2O2 respectively, in the fridge.
