hey and have decided to take a try at something else. I was reffered to this site and have read over several teks. I was wondering if someone could make suggestions for the following (taking into account that I AM A BEGINNER)
-For making a substrate, do you recommend using the brown rice flour technique or birdseed? (for a first time!) -Also, as this is my first time, should I try casing to improve my yield or is it too complicated? -Are the advantages of a pressure cooker so good as I should invest in one rather than using a regular pot?
Thanks alot guys, I will be posting pics once I start
P.S. How long does it take for spore works to deliver syringes to Southern ONtario area?

In reply to:

Start out with the PF Tek so that you can get your feet wet.

For the first grow, I recommend the PF Tek.

If you can invest in a PC now, do it. It works great for the PF Tek and is virtually mandatory when working with grains.
Peace

Ok i had to edit out the bad in your post Now to answer your questions... Use brf for your first time it's the easiest and the least likely to contaminate. Second do a mix half cakes and half casing. Use half your cakes for casings and half as cakes that way you get experience both ways. I also suggest a straight verm casing at first as it's the easiest. THird use a pot. No need for a pressure cooker until you are ready to try grains/ birdseed And finally. I recommend you try Thai ks or Thai Lipa Yai for your first try. it will be easy and rewarding if you use one of these

Thanks alot guys
sorry you had to edit...anyways just to tell you, I have already ordered Equador and Amazonian as I was told they were generally easier to grow. Oh yeah, if I try both ways, can I put the cased and the regular cakes in the same terrarrium or is the humidity difference that important....by the way I am using perlite as a humidity source!
Oh yeah....when can I expect my syringes, its killing me!

This is a good suggestion.

I feel that the difference is important. Cakes like it near 100% and fruiting casings prefer to be near 90%.
Good luck!

you can put them in together no probs... Perlite is fine for humidty just don't over wet it. Good call on 2 different strains too Eq's are great. i hear good things about amazonians also.

so your basically saying that trying both way means that I'll just have to make two terrariums?
Anyways, while I'm waiting for the syringes (how long will I wait) I have purchased my vermiculite, perlite and other odds and ends. I guess I will have to pick up a cheap Pressure Cooker (how low do they go?) and since you suggested, some brf!
I'm getting so damn excited

I prefer to have my fruiting efforts separated if I have cakes and casings around -- their preferred conditions are slightly different. Normally, I don't have any cakes around. When I do, I use an old 10 gallon aquarium filled with moist perlite.
Good luck!

So for casings do you think I should use a method other than perlite to humidify? What method should I use then?
And just out of curiousity, beside humidity levels, are there any other differences in the terrariums I should make?
Thanks a lot

Casings provide their own humidity for the most part. A good place for you to start would be the cultivation FAQ.

perlite will work for your casings... And you can put em in the same fruiting chamber if you like
