Wow, those look a lot different from images in field guides, etc. Where are the scabbery tiger stripe things?
I'd be interested in seeing how they look grown outdoors on logs!

i posted a couple pictures of some wild ones. I did a lot of searching and Lentinus Tigrinus seems to be the definite match. I've sent Workman a print, if he identifies it as anything different i'll be sure to change the thread.

The last update to this thread was in August of last year. The two blocks were allowed to dry out completely after the second flush. A few days back i decided it was time to break them up and lay them to rest in the compost bin. They weighed only a few ounces and were so solid i had to break them apart with a pitch fork. The texture was somewhat like styrofoam but much more dense. To my surprise the mycelium had decomposed the mulch so well that it crumbled into a nice loamy fluff leaving almost no solid wood behind. I find that to be remarkable for only two flushes.
These pictures show the incredible density of the mycelium
This picture shows how nicely the block crumbled. extremely soft and fluffy.
These are the largest pieces of wood i could find left in the block.
Personally I'm quite excited about this. This mushroom could be a wonderful tool for the breaking down of ligneous material very quickly while at the same time producing food.
On a side note after breaking apart the blocks i watered the compost and after a few days the mycelium has reanimated and is still going strong.

Waix, which conditions do find most important for fruiting this species. I managed to have a great pinset- twice- on a block, both times they stalled/aborted. (From multi-spore on WBS) I didn't expect to have any issues in getting fruits from this species, but here I am with no fruits. After the first set, I started misting, which contributed to early-onset of trich. Had to pitch the only block I started. I would have done more, but as previously stated, I didn't expect ANY problems with fruiting.
The only thing I can think is too low FAE? (I managed to fruit H. erinaceus easily in the same GH with no problems on humidity or FAE. )

fresh air seemed to be the greatest limiting factor for me. ive seen them handle full sun with low humidity. Low FAE only caused the coral like structures though. I wonder if maybe the isolate i have is extra vigorous. I havent tried growing them from multispore. I should be getting some fruits soon, i'll take a few prints and see how it goes with ms.

I only have a print. I guess I should have cloned several pins while I had them. Next time, I will. I'll put them in a "dry" GH and increase the FAE. Thanks for the information.

Wow, that is fantastic how well that devoured that mulch.
Definitely something to consider in recycling.

That is incredible! I'm keen to see if I end up with similar results. For some reason, I've never got past the grain stage with this species yet. Every time I've inoculated grain, something has prevented me from having the time to spawn it and the grain has decayed, succumbing to bacteria, mould, mites or age (polyfill definitely has its disadvantages). I'll be starting again in a couple of days, with the intention of seeing it to fruition this time round.

Nice work! Are you trading any wedges of that culture?

I told Workman I'd get him a sample also. Unfortunately, my first run through failed miserably. (much to my surprise)
Be sure to post the results when you find out!
