Isn't that copyright infringement? The state of Georgia came first, they should sue the country for copyright infringement:crankey:

I don't want to sound alarmist, but when I first heard this, my thought was that these are the kind of events that can escalate quickly into world war three.  Why the hell would russia pick the olympics as a time to make this move?

^ I agree, it's this kind of random aggression/timing that can really escalate things.

Russia is fucking crazy, that's why.

edit:
It would've been worse if Georgia had actually gotten into NATO. That would be one huge clusterfuck.

To clear something up. Russia didnt invade Georgia out of the blue. It responded to Georgia's attack on South Ossetia. Read this:

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/South_Ossetia#Georgian-Ossetian_conflict

Georgia commenced bombardment after being warned to stand down by Russia. They're picking quite a fight. :foreheadslap:

Provocations? Was that before or after Georgia invaded South Ossetia?

Now they're trying to get US into this, using the withdrawal of their troops from iraq to fight Russia as a leverage. As of now US isn't siding with anyone, other then sending some people over to promote a seize fire.

russia has been trying to get its satellite countries occupied again after they broke apart from the soviet union. they'll use all the propaganda they can, like any other large nation who can get away with it just because they have 10,000 nukes.

the U.S. and europe SHOULD get into this before it escalates. if russia occupies a free country and goes unpunished then what's next?

That is if they attempt to actually occupy that country. In the mean time they are just responding to Georgia's aggression. I doubt full-on occupation is in Russia's interests as that would obviously look really bad, and is totally unnecessary.

Georgia invaded, if I understand it correctly, a territory that was occupied with rebels which had tried to break apart from Georgia. If I understand this correctly it was a civil war that Russia used as an excuse to invade.

What's next is one really messy situation, maybe the conflict of our generation.

I've been wondering where the fuck it was. Iraq doesn't cut it, btw. Most Americans are chilling in their AC-cooled-houses really just watching it on TV. I mean a conflict that gets us really out and involved.

Russia has been rebuilding to become better than it was before, and this time it will have the added benefit of morality on it's side. Putin has done a good job of making sure Russia has begun to be viewed in a different light.

either way, with the current state of the world...some really crucial shit will likely go down soon.

Its hardly a civil war when one county invades an independent republic that was once a part of that country.

Absolutely nothing.  Countries have been doing this for forever.  Its amazing after our current situation in Iraq people would want to get involved in the politics and conflicts of other nations, even less tied to our national security than the mid east.

its like this: they'll go through ethnic cleansing, move lots of russian citizen to former georgian areas and put puppet leaders in charge who will soon say they wish to join the glorious russia.

georgia is pulling their people out of iraq, some 2000 men. also russias "official" statement said its not the army thats attacking georgia but "volunteers".

its like this: they'll go through ethnic cleansing, move lots of russian citizen to former georgian areas and put puppet leaders in charge who will soon say they wish to join the glorious russia.

Good job blowing this out of proportion.

Did you know about the "Massacres of Georgians in Abkhazia" the genocide perpetrated by Russian Federation Forces and Russian Mercenaries in 1991-1993 and 1998?

Nah, there are too many genocides going on to keep track of them all. But that still doesn't have much to do with the simple fact that Georgia struck first. Anyways tho.. I dont mean to sound like im defending Russia here. All political/military conflicts are fucking ridiculous and sickening as far as I am concerned. I'm merely trying to keep the facts straight.

Almost every news article about this story mentions that Georgia struck first, even if most downplay it.

I also posted this before: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/South_Ossetia#Georgian-Ossetian_conflict

I'm no expert in politics or the history of this region, but it seems quite clear to me that in terms of present day, Ossetia is an independent region, and Georgia attacked it in an attempt to claim it. Russia being the big neighbor felt the need to intervene. I don't see the need to get any possible wrongdoing on the part of Russia that happened in the past involved in this. Feel free to correct me.

With georgia calling their 20,000 troops from iraq and some US troops heading over I can see this getting either better or worse real quick.

The opposition in georgia is heavily funded by the russians with russian interest in mind. Russia has been trying to consume them for a long time, and I see no problem with them standing their ground and defending what is rightfully theirs.

But back in reality it is a tiny podunk country trying to take on one of the 3 or so global super powers. I think the US's friendship with Georgia isn't going to be strong enough to go to WW3 over some troops in Iraq, unless of course they/we are looking for conflict.

I don't know too much but this effects myself and my family alot right now because my home is owned by the georgian government. Hope all ends peacefully. =[

I didn't see before how recently SO actually separated. It's only been a few years. It does looks a lot more like civil war. It's too bad Georgia couldn't just let it go. Guess we'l have to wait and see what happens.

you have to ask what does Georgia have to offer....how can the U.S. profit from helping this tiny state...

they can't...it will be swallowed up by the olympics and the U.S. election..the media will block it out by the end of the weekend...

unless O'Bama decides hes going to use it to promote how wonderful he is...

U.S. backed Georgia attacked first, killing at least 3 Russian peacekeepers and 15 civilians. Both bush and israel have stated that they support Georgia.

The U.S. has showed Georgia support for some time to.

US runs military exercise around Georgia conflict

Now Public
July 17, 2008

The conflict in the Caucasus country of Georgia is growing to alarming levels. The country is fighting with a break-away region in teh North called Abkhazia, where an ethnic minority lives. The area is currently de-facto independent, and Russia is backing the area’s claims to independence, although it’s not really clear why. The US secretary of state Condoleeza Rice visited the country earlier this month, and now the US military is running exercises around the conflict. Could the US military be planning to get involved in this Caucasus conflict? The US would be supporting its pro-West ally Georgia, while Russia would be supporting the rebels. Not exactly a good idea geopolitically!

Green Berets now in Georgia: U.S. Special Forces are training Georgian soldiers to fight radical Muslims. The mission could benefit other U.S. interests as well

President George Bush called the May deployment of some 150 U.S. advisers to Georgia the latest front in the U.S. war on terrorism. Much like their fellow soldiers in the Philippines, U.S. Special Forces are teaching Georgian soldiers how to better fight Muslim extremists within their country. Also, as in the Philippines, U.S. troops are not permitted to engage in combat.

Special Forces to Train Georgian Military

NewsMax.com Wires
Thursday, Feb. 28, 2002

WASHINGTON – Concerned that al-Qaeda terrorists have moved into the former Soviet republic of Georgia, the U.S. military is expected to send as many as 200 special operations soldiers there for up to a year to train the Georgian military in counterterror and counterinsurgency tactics.

From Wikipedia

The Georgia Train and Equip Program (GTEP) training was conducted using U.S. Special Operations Forces and U. S. Marine Corps forces from May 2002 to May 2004. During this time approximately 2,600 Georgian soldiers, including a headquarters staff element and 5 tactical units, received training. Another assistance program, the Georgia Security and Stability Operations Program (Georgia SSOP), was launched in January 2005 as a continuation of the (GTEP) of 2002-2004. Georgian contingents were involved in the Kosovo Force and continue to participate in the operations in Iraq and Afghanistan.

For a third day high-placed Russian and Georgian politicians have been pronouncing loaded phrases, in the deparaging sense, which are not acceptable in diplomatic protocal. In reply to the suggestion of Igor Ivanov that bin Laden might be hiding in the Pankisi gorge, a more than insulting answer followed from President Eduard Shevardnadze, with the proposal to seek out the terrorist in Ivanov’s mother’s house. they can't...it will be swallowed up by the olympics and the U.S. election..the media will block it out by the end of the weekend...

unless O'Bama decides hes going to use it to promote how wonderful he is...

Out of the two presidential candidates liable to seek political gain from a military conflict, you choose Obama?  You're delusional

well i have consumed copius amounts of ganja over the years...but yes...O'Bama...

That freaks me out, dude.

I just heard about Georgia today because it's a country mentioned in Orson Scott Card's Shadow of the Giant...first time I've ever heard of it as a country, and then in the same day, I heard about this conflict with Russia...

...makes one wonder.

its pretty mindboggling.    the sheer size of that explosion can really send chills down your spine.

this should drive the nail in even deeper for you.  search for wheverever you live, and see the size differences on a map.

Wow, the tzar bomba would take out ALL of san francisco, and it's effects would be felt all the way out to redwood city, fremont, dublin, concord, vallejo, AND novato.  That's pretty much the entire bay area gone.  I'm SURE they're a prime target too, since there are a large number of oil reserves that I drive past just before getting on the bay bridge.  Even if they don't wanna bomb one of the largest population centers, you can be damn sure that that shits getting shot at.

San Diego's going down for sure too, with the naval base there, and Los Angeles, because that's where the Lakers play.

Is the TZAR BOMBA a fusion bomb? I think the atom bomb the United States dropped on Hiroshima uses nuclear fission, but the fusion bomb is like 1000 times more powerful right?

Ok, it's the hydrogen bomb - 4000 times as powerful as Hiroshima.

South Ossetia is a breakaway region of Georgia, trying to gain independace since a civil war in the early nineties. Georgia moved to regain control of that region - I see no fault on the side of Georgia. Sure, Ossetians are a different ethnic group than Georgians, but so are Basques from the Spanish and tons more ethnicities that want their own micro-nations, which would have no prospects, be unstable, and would leech off whatever regional power is the closest. So fuck South Ossetia, and fuck Russia. I hope Georgia goes Chechen on Russia's ass and destroys the invading army.

Fuck, I want to go out there right now and work as a merc. What I would give to kick some commie Russian ass. Let's not forget that those Georgians have been in Iraq, they've got combat experience, and they're on their home turf. That can mean a whole lot, even against the Russians.

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Winter_war

The Winter War (Finnish: Talvisota, Russian: Зимняя война, Swedish: Vinterkriget) began when the Soviet Union led by Joseph Stalin attacked Finland on November 30, 1939, three months after the invasion of Poland by Germany that started World War II. Because the attack was judged as illegal, the Soviet Union was expelled from the League of Nations on December 14.

The Soviet forces outnumbered the Finns 4 to 1 in men, 200 to 1 in tanks, and 30 to 1 in aircraft. However, the Soviet Red Army had recently been subjected to a drastic purge in 1937 that crippled it, reducing its morale and efficiency just before the war. With up to 50% of army officers executed, including the vast majority of those of the highest rank, the Red Army in 1939 had many inexperienced senior officers. Thus, the Finns were able to resist the invasion of their country with great success and for far longer than the Soviets had expected.

Finland held out until March 1940, when the Moscow Peace Treaty was signed, ceding about 9% of Finland's territory and 20% of its industrial capacity to the Soviet Union. Soviet losses on the front were tremendously large, and the country's international standing suffered. Also, the fighting ability of the Red Army was questioned, a factor that contributed to Adolf Hitler's decision to launch Operation Barbarossa. Finally, the Soviet forces did not accomplish their primary objective of conquest of Finland but gained only a slice of territory along Lake Ladoga. The Finns retained their sovereignty and gained considerable international goodwill.
