Bad idea or horrible idea... home made ozone generator
    #8733266 - 08/06/08 11:27 AM (15 years, 9 months ago)

I live in an old building. I don't mean 1970s old, I mean 1870s old. I get some funky smells in this place. On top of that, I'm a smoker.

Easy solution to the smoke smell would be don't smoke inside or just quit smoking all together. I've tried the latter several times and I just can't seem to do it, but that's a discussion for another post.

While I could just go smoke outside, I live in a shitty neighborhood. Just about every time I go outside to smoke on the stoop, I get harassed by vagrants. Sure, I just tell them "sorry man, all out." Should work, right? Nope. One time a guy said "Yo son, lemme get a cigarette," to which I replied "No, sorry man." His response? "Man fuck you white boy, I'll spit on you." I've learned a lot about self control living here

So either way, not smoking and smoking outside are not working out for me.

So I got this idea to build an ozone generator rather than buy one for several hundred dollars.

I found these plans online:

http://erikmartin.com/sci/ozone/ozone.html

First, it needs to be said that the only real electronics work I've done involves computers, and nothing at this voltage or amperage. I do know proper safety precautions for electricity, however.

While it's not professional by any means, and could use some safety modifications, I think it's a decent alternative. Run that sucker for an hour or two a day inline with a fan while I'm out of the house and smells should be gone right?

A few questions:

1. How dangerous do you think this thing is, provided I do plenty of safety tests and take all precautions?

2. Do you think it would produce dangerous amounts of ozone? Anyway to calculate how much is produced based on surface area/voltage applied?

Thanks guys!

In the U.S., air purifiers emitting lower levels of ozone have been sold. This kind of air purifier is sometimes claimed to imitate nature's way of purifying the air[44] without filters and to sanitize both it and household surfaces. The United States Environmental Protection Agency has declared that there is "evidence to show that at concentrations that do not exceed public health standards, ozone is not effective at removing many odor-causing chemicals" or "viruses, bacteria, mold, or other biological pollutants." Furthermore, its report states that "results of some controlled studies show that concentrations of ozone considerably higher than these [human safety] standards are possible even when a user follows the manufacturer’s operating instructions."[45] The government successfully sued one company in 1995, ordering it to stop repeating health claims without supporting scientific studies.

Yes.

I played around with a couple different designs and came up with one that works fairly well.  Used a neon sign transformer, conductive paint, PVC pipe (two sizes), and a small fan.  Painted the inside of the large PVC, and the outside of the small PVC.  Mounted the small PVC inside the large PVC (using nylon stock I had laying around, wood plugs would work fine) and hooked one end of the neon sign transformer up to each pipe's painted surface.  Put the fan on one end to blow air through the pipe.  Ran the fan with a wall wart.

The above system was fairly safe and pretty quiet.  I had tried a slew of other setups... pickle jar with aluminum foil on the outside and inside, etc... they were all noisy and dangerous.

The downside is that ozone is really nasty.  Prolonged exposure to low levels of ozone is really, really nasty.  Save yourself the trouble and skip the ozone generator.  Your body will thank you.

He could light a plasma flame for a few minutes, twice a day. That could help. Maybe make it a tweeter on a home audio system.

I've always wanted to build one of those, but never got around to it.

With a charcoal filter, perhaps...

Would it just be easier to just use nicotine inhalers, or patches?

I've tried weaning off, cold turkey, chewing regular gum, chewing nicotine gum, and the nicotine patch. I still smoke a pack a day... you might say those methods didn't work for me.

Back when I was a freshman in college I had some typical "college adjustment" issues and developed minor depression and general anxiety. Of course all they did was feed me some welbutrin and said "get better!" While it helped with the depression and GAD, it also made me just... forget to smoke.

So I think I'm going to go back on welbutrin(aka Zyban) or I may give Chantix a try. I hate having to go that route to quit, but it's getting to the point now that I'll do whatever it takes to save my lungs from further damage.

And as far as the HEPA filter goes, I have one, but it doesn't have any carbon. Next time I'm at Home Depot I'm going to pick up a roll of that carbon floss and slap it on top of the HEPA filter, perhaps that'll work before I go messing with 10,000v of electricity

Perhaps you build a fume hood of sorts, evacuating to the outside, and smoke under that? I seriously considered doing that a few times before I quit.
