computer help.
    #8732014 - 08/06/08 12:45 AM (15 years, 9 months ago)

So my pc has been acting really screwey.

I run xp and a few days ago it stopped working. When I would choose a profile it would come up with some error message, and then the backround of the profile would come up, but nothing would load. I could open mozilla through task manager, but it was far from fully functional.

Just now i turned the computer on, and it started to load the profile screen, but all it said was welcome, the names and icons for the profiles weren't there. So I hit ctrl+alt+delete, and windows loaded up normally, but with a generic background and no specefic user settings.

I'm afraid to restart or attempt to exit and log onto a profile.

What should I do??

And I said, I don't care if they lay me off either, because I told, I told Bill that if they move my desk one more time, then, then I'm, I'm quitting, I'm going to quit. And, and I told Don too, because they've moved my desk ...four times already this year and I used to be over by the window and I could see the squirrels, and they were merry, but then, they switched from the Swingline to the Boston stapler, but I kept my Swingline stapler because it didn't bind up as much and I kept the staples for the Swingline stapler and its not okay because if they take my stapler then I'll set the building on fire.

Don't restart. You might find you can't load windows at all. It happened to me once, the problem was my NTFS permissions got screwed up and I lost my READ permissions on the system files. So lame.

But that might not be the cause here. You might have a corrupted user profile hive. Have a look around for a hive cleanup tool - I think Microsoft has one you can download.

Good luck!

Do you mean a reg cleaner? I would strongly recommend NOT using one of those. The few times I have experimented with them they have only made things worse.

If you can load windows and you have an XP disk open a command prompt and type sfc /scannow. It will search for and replace corrupt system files. I've had that help before.

Also if you can access your important data, back it up next time you boot up. If you cant, slave that drive in another machine and see if you can grab the files that way.
After you've backed everything up, try to delete all user profiles and re-create them.

Try booting into safe mode and run a virus scan like AVG or Avast...I like Avast cause you can schedule a boot time scan.

If those don't work and again if you have an XP cd, boot to it and run a repair from the disk. You'll need the key though.

Nope, the hive. The registry is just one part of the hive. It's in C:\WINDOWS\system32\config\

Yeah, I'm familiar with what the hive is but I've never seen a hive cleaner...hmm just found it. Have you used this with success?

Well... I'm not sure. The tool I got is mostly a preventative one, it routinely checks the hive for errors and fixes them before they become serious. I installed it AFTER I had a corrupted hive that I fixed by reinstalling Windows.

I haven't had it become corrupt since then, but I can't necessarily attribute it to the tool.

It's screwed.  Back up your important files and do a wipe and reload Windows (or the OS of your choice).  Make sure you have all the right drivers before you do this too, I've been helping a lot of people with disfunctional hardware after they managed a wipe and reload.  A driver, what's that?  Ha
