previous failure/ why?

The last time I tried grain jars, I failed. I now wonder why so I can avoid the same mistakes twice.
I did several jars using the tek on the mushmush site. I PC'ed for 90 minutes at 15 psi.
I think the jars were to wet but anyway...
All of the jars failed. Some of them germinated but stalled... Most jars had a sweet odor (apple like?) when opeaned
Possible reasons: 1) I introduced contaims when I inoculated. 2) the lids were tight and had no vents so the mold sufficated 3) none of the above...
whatchen's think?

No hole in lid = no gas exchange.
Sounds like grain was too wet & anarobic bacteria gotcha.

The Raccoons.........................
Basic Bird Seed (BBS)
No Wizardry, timers or measuring -- here:
Soak some basic bird seed (primarily white & red millet - with some other grains, SF seeds, crushed corn ) in water - over night (about 12 to 18 hours).
Option / add some ( whatever you think is good) nutes like dung/straw water, brown rice syrup and/or light dry malt to the "soak".
After soak -- Rinse well with water.
Drain WELL. Like real well. So NO water drips from seed.
Load jars 3/4 full, add filter disk (internal), screw on lid (w/1 hole or 2) & leave 1/4 to 1/2 turn loose.
Rubber band double layer coffee filters over lids (external)
PC @ 15 pounds 60 to 90 minutes.
Allow PC to cool to -0- pressure.
Remove jars while still hot, tighten lid & shake.
Store jars in clean - dry - place until cooled to room temp.
Cleanly innoc jars w/spore syringe or G2G transfers.
Store in dark dry place @ 75 to 82 F.
Be patient.
smiles will happen.

Too wet is very possibly, the mushmush recipe uses very much water.
The smell tells you that you have an bacterial contamination, which is very possibly with overly wet grain substrate.

I agree with Anno and Sixtango.
You got a bacterial contam....what was the amount of water that you used? You probably used a little too much water.

I had the same problem with Rye.
Now I use a little less water and I don't have any problems with Rye.

I find first putting your grain in the jars and then adding water to about 5mm above the grain line works really well for me. The thing is though, I followed no recipes, all I did was make a batch ad it had to much water so next time round I added less water and it was perfect. So test different recipes and find amounts that work best for you.

you should always do a tesbtach first:
i quote from our website:
Different ratios of rye and water have been suggested by literature. We recommend you do a testbatch with different ratios of water and rye to see what works best for you. The 1:1 ration we use contains the maximum amount of water the we could use. When using larger volumes (big jars or bags) less water should be added or the bottom kernels will turn to brown goo. When using the colonised rye grain to directly fruit the grain can be somewhat wetter then when it's used to inoculate (non sterile) bulk substrate. Exploded kernels with their starchy inside exposed can flourish with bacterial bloom upon contact with non sterile materials.

or (since I'm assuming you have access to an oven) just do a simply moisture analysis on your batch of grain. This entails taking 100 g of rye from the bag and drying it in oven for btw 90-120min at around 300 Fahrenheit (140-150 C) then reweighing the sample and dividing the difference by the original wet weight. This gives you percent moisture. now (for quart jars) mix up your rye and water so that total moisture content is 50%. mmmmmm... happy mycelium
