perlite?

i heard that you can use perlite as a substitute for vermiculite. i ahve 3 questions about this.....
1.where can i find perlite?
2.is perlite easier to find than vermiculite?
3.i think i read somewhere that you cant use perlite in some phase, but im not sure i dont know about that, any input would be greatly appreciated.

1. Perlite can be found in most garden supply stores... If you live near a K-mart or something like that, check their gardening sections inside AND outside... They will probably tell you they dont have it, but they will.
2. I think it was easier to find...
3. It is used for humidification. Cheap, easy humidfication... Like in a terrerium, after you've birthed the cakes...

so i cant use it as a substitute for vermiculate right fro the begining and inoculation?

I've heard stories of this, but I have never tried it myself, so I wouldn't know... I would just say to try and get the vermiculite and try it like that. Straying away from the basic teks could spell disaster...
