Hygrophorus pratensis (maybe)
    #8721011 - 08/03/08 07:07 PM (15 years, 7 months ago)

Ok, I keyed this out to Hygrophorus pratensis .  The description in Mushrooms Demystified matches it to a tee.  However, it looks nothing like the pictures.

Am I mistaken?

Those are the most gill-like false gills I have ever seen.  I have never seen it in our area, ever.

Thanks.

Yeah, I believe those are false gills...but sometimes it is a tough call. That's why I like the Smooth Chanterelle so much

I've sworn that I've found "chantie-like" tiny waxcaps around the same time that Smooth Chanties were sprouting, but I could've been wrong and left tiny chanties to the bugs.

A lot of those little waxy cap things are good eating.  Camarophyllus pratensis is excellent.

Well I don't have a lot of experience finding/picking Cantharellus cinnabarinus.  This is what I found earlier this year:

They don't look anything like each other.  I didn't realize it was so variable.

They look very similar to me, save for the exact shape and color of the false gills. A patch of Cinnabars or similar C. minors I found had individuals with caps like those found in both pictures. I've seen similar variety in cap shapes with the Smooth Chanties, too.

The mushrooms in the first pic had extremely long stems; the others were short and squatty.  The mushrooms in the first pic had plane caps; the others were inrolled.  But most important were the gills.  I'm not doubting the ID, but damn, those gills were VERY well-formed.

Unfortunately I didn't bring them home.  I was too busy collecting Chanterelles.
