Flow Hood

I want to make a flow hood for grain to grain transfers and need some help as to how powerful of a blower I will need because i suck with math, i'm making a flow hood similar to this http://www.sentryair.com/Images/218-PCR-1-l.jpg except I'm making it with bins. I will use a large see through bin on the bottom with a square cut out for my arms to go in and air to flow out. I am planning to put a smaller bin on top with the fan going into it and the filter between the smaller and bigger bin so i can sanitize the large bin and the clean air will flow through it and out the cut out space in the front. I calculated the area of the small bin i'm planning on using, it is 1.33680556 cubic ft, my filter is 6.5in by 9.5in it is rated 99.97% down to .3 microns. How powerfull of a fan will i need to use? Thanks a lot

I would think that if you were going to use that exact setup that the filter is no bigger than say 1 foot by 1 foot so thats about 100 cfm you need there for you can try and get one of these Fans..

Or even something like this Fan
your cheapest bet would be something like this you can find them at home depot for around 20-30 bucks and they go up to 400 cfm which is enough static pressure for a hepa filter that is 2 foot by 2 foot...

Well a flow hood usually gives you more room to work.. You have a blower that blows air throw a hepa filter into the bottom chamber.. Being this air is now clean air because it was pushed through the hepa filter then you have a clean environment to work with your jars and what not also it's more forgiving if you use half way decent sterile techniques with a flow hood you will most likely not get any contams.. 100% success rate... Only because you are working in a sterile environment..
Glovebox is same idea but less room to work in as well as they are a fire hazard because there is really no air flow.. So if you decide to use a lighter in it without being careful you will ignite the alcohol fumes and start a nice fire..

glove boxes are still useful though especially if your working with mushrooms from the wild because a flow hood will blow those spores everywhere.
Damion5050 I've never seen anyone use something like this http://www.indoorgarden.com/store/product.php?productid=16465&cat=263&page=1, will these be able to provide adequate pressure?

I doubt it. Those look kind of cheesy. You need a squirrel cage type fan. The above posted chart is what you need to figure out your setup. Laminar flow hoods move air at an ideal velocity of 100 feet per minute. Fans are rated according to how much air they can push through materials (filters) of specified resistance. Filters are measured in inches of static pressure at a specific air speed.
Before you buy a filter, you can see it's dimensions, and static pressure rating. Then you can do a division problem to ascertain what the fans CFM needs to be.
I want to build a flow hood so bad. Your one lucky buck!

Go to home depot and check them out they are in the heating and air section of the store.. the 4 inch ones should have about 100 cfm's and the 6 inch should be around 200 and the 8 inch around 400-500 cfm's.. They are mainly used as booster fans in the heating and air conditioning field.. They work very very well, and I don't see why they wouldn't work for a flow hood..

The math is easy..
1. Find out the area of your filter by multiplying the width and the hight in feet (for instance the smallest reasonably usable filter would be 2ft x 1ft) 2ft x 1ft = 2 ft2
2. Multiply the required air speed(the one Stamets specifies, 100 ft/min) with the area of your filter 100 ft/min x 2 ft2 = 200 ft3/min
So 200 ft3/min(= cfm = "cubic feet per minute") is the amount of air your blower must deliver at the sum of the STATIC PRESSURE of the HEPA filter + prefilter.
NOTE: 1 cfm= 1.7m3/h
So if you use the above filter with 1"(250Pa) static pressure and a furnace prefilter with a static pressure of 0.2"(50Pa) your blower must deliver 200 cfm(340m3/h) of air at a static pressure of 1.2"(300Pa).

Here u can try one of these more efficient.. Also there is nothing wrong with having to much air flow at least I don't think.. If I am wrong let me know.. FAN

Wow, I never would have thought that those could push that much air!

Here are some links right to Home Depot's website.. The only reason I know about these fans is because I use to work in the heating and air industry about 4 years ago and I also use to use these fans to vent a growing chamber I had at one time for weed...
80 cfm Fan
160 cfm Fan
210 cfm Fan
