STARBUCKS IN MY SUBSTRATE???
    #8722758 - 08/04/08 03:39 AM (15 years, 6 months ago)

ok, this may sound dumb.. Whats the deal with the coffee guys? I ran into a thread talking about putting some coffe in the substrate. I did a few searches like "why coffee?" and "what does coffee do?"... I can only find people talking about using spent grounds and so on.. So what does it do? whats the word on the starbucks in my substrate? decafinated?? or cafinated?? :-)
Also if im adding coffee whats a good rule of thumb for adding the correct ammounts the the substrate?? thanks guys. Is their any other ingredients I should be aware of?? lol.. fill me in because I dont remember many of the TEKS (if any) telling me to throw in some coffee grinds in my mix. I always go the extra mile.. If its coffee they want well god damnit its coffee theyll get! :headbanger:

Coffee contains extra nitrogen for your myc to feed on.

Take this with a grain of salt as I am only in the process of my first grow currently (spawned all of my colonized jars to poo/coir/coffee/straw):

A while ago, I got started in this hobby with 2 batches of 20 BRF jars prepared identically the same day. For the first batch I followed PF-TEK instructions exactly and on the second batch the water used to hydrate the verm was a 1:1 mixture of water and coffee (liquid coffee, not grounds,  very dark roast).

Without exception ALL of the jars with coffee colonized faster than the jars without it. On average the coffee seemed to speed up colonization by 7 days.

Then again my first batch was from MS, so even though this result was consistent accross 40 jars, I would not call it scientific.

OH SWEET. So its like a mycelium steroid! lol.. why not add nitrogen instead of coffee then?? coffee must be the right ammount and must be gental to the mycelium. anyone else have some input?? whats the coffee/substrate ratio?? So you guys are adding this stuff to your spawn? and your bulk substrates?? Is there a certain type of coffee?? like the extra dark shit? mild?? or go with a medium blend of some off-brand stuff. oh and yes I read that I can use spent coffee grounds.. I guess thats a good reason to start drinking again! :-) I cant see myself up in starbucks like "yo can i get them left over grounds?" lol.. I mean what if they asked why?? they would prob look at me strange..

thanks for the input so far as I try to discover the world of mushrooms and coffee!

Extemely interested in this as well.  I don't drink coffee but I got a hook up at biggbey's (formally beaner's, political corrertness, I knew that name wouldn't last long).  Thinking of adding some spent grounds to my spawn (trying rye berries this time) and my sub (coco).  What ratio is recommended?

MORE INFO NEEDED

What does that have a special spot SPECIFICALLY for coffee??
You dont even have a link for that calculator thing.
If its what I think it is I have seen it and that has nothing to do with the question.

my mixture will roughly be

60% coir
20% coffee
20% wbsf

so if you had a cups amount of substrate (your going to have alot more then this it is just to show ratio) i would have 20% of a cups worth of spent coffee grounds, you could put more like the guy earlier said there is a guy doing a 100% coffee substrate grow.

cool thanks man. much appreciated. 20% sounds good. So your saying 20% by volume not weight.. right? anyhone else with any input on the coffee subject feel free to add an opinions or suggestions. Or any experience you may have had using coffee in their substrate. Is it really worth the effort to add the coffee? what kind of extra added results will this bring? I read that during incubation faster colonization was reported. Will this effect the fruits a whole lot? any info is always appreciated.

so just add around 20% to my substrate after pasterization or during??

so I can grip up a can of this stuff right? this is what i want?

i too like bahai used liquid coffee in my spawn jars of wbs. i took 2 and a half quarts of dry wbs (i think after pc and everything it made 7 quart jars) and soaked it in either 2 or 3 quarts of water mixed with 8 cups of fresh liquid coffee. let it soak for a good 15 hours and then proceeded.

after inc. of the jars i think i saw very small growth in like 2 days but on day three i have quite a few bright white inc. beginnings.

it really is amazing how fast the jars are colonizing.
