Total Newb, saying hi and a coupla q's

Hi everyone, been lurking for a while, decided to register and post. Ive got a growbox coming soon. Wait, wait...before I get a crapload of posts telling me how much cheaper it is to DIY, etc...I have my reasons for getting a pre-inoculated kit. I know how easily I can get all the equipment I need to grow, in fact I have most of it already, or available to buy easily. Its the culture thats the problem. Some countries customs get suspicious when you get syringes of strange looking liquids in the mail. Of course, the supposed ease of growing is also a factor.
Basically, the ideal thing for me would be to grow some shrooms, then make prints from a couple of those and/or use the spent cake to make an outside grow...after a few flushes from the original box, this can still be done, right? I've seen a couple of Outdoor teks that mention using old cakes. Or, if its totally spent, I can still get spores by not harvesting some shrooms and letting them fruit, right?
My aim is just to not have to rely on ordering spores etc through the mail, like making some seeds when growing weed. (Which I do.)
As I said, Im a total newb to cultivating shrooms, and have only had them a few times. I still have no idea what casing and all that means, Im used to growing weed.
I have a lot of reading to do before the kit arrives...what would be great would be to have a self-perpetuating outdoor patch...

"Kits" dont come pre-inoculated. Pre-sterilized maybe...
With both a homemade setup and a grow kit you still need spores.
If a syringe will be too suspicious then order a spore print instead and make your own syringe.
Spore prints will look and weigh the same as a normal letter when mailed.

Bubba: Thanks for the reply. Its a pre-inoculated growkit, the "just add water" ones. I thought about ordering spore prints but I'd still have to get hold of a syringe somehow.

Yes prints are probably the best why to get spores mailed internationally. Yes you might be able to get some fruits from spent cakes. (not totally spent but it is possible and likely in the right conditions). You should and could make spore prints from you fruits, or make some LC from you prints or tissue clones or make some petri dishes which you could make LC's from or just use the agar to inoculate your jars of grains or seeds. You won't have to buy any more prints unless you want to try some different strains.

Seems sketchy to me. If it truly is pre-inoculated, that would mean that the substrate in the jars is already at the correct moisture and sterilized.
Also the seller would be violating federal law since cubensis spores are sold legally for microscopy only. Not for cultivation.

Yep. It might be ready to be inoculated (sterilized) but I don't think it is already inoculated unless it is a edible shroom. What strain is it?

bubba: I assume the federal law you speak of is US? Neither the supplier nor I am in the US...
Maybe I'm getting my terminology wrong? I think I mean colonzied? I could post a link, but they're not sponsors. Similar kits can be found here at Azarius:
http://www.azarius.net/shrooms/grow_boxes/growbox_cubensis/
And, as you can see in the instructions, you just add water to the substrate:
http://www.azarius.net/media/manuals/growboxinstructions_uk.pdf
hottamali: I hope it will be edible. This growkit is meant to grow PC.

I was thinking they were shipping from the US. Just add water? They must have dropped spores on the substate and you need to hydrate them. I'm not well enough versed on that to comment but it sounds strange to me. But again once you have some fruits you can clone to a LC or petri dish and continue life cycle without buying more prints or syringes.

hottamali: Thanks for the replies. I suppose I'll just follow the instructions and post my results here. Thanks for the tips, and I'll read up on liquid cultures etc. Good to know I can be self-sufficient.

look into agar/petri dishes as well. You can make lc's from the an agar wedge, or use the a piece of the agar to transfer to a jar of grain or seed and then use that jar to do G2G transfers and you will be self sufficient. There is a spore print club in Europe where people trade prints with each other. You can probably search for it here or google it. Any questions try to look it up and your find it in here if not just post a question and someone will help you.
Happy cultivating

Well, it arrived and I followed the instructions. That was about 5 days ago and I can see lots of white patches spreading over the substrate. Success so far.
