ok. so i've got a friend offering to sell me his cell phone at a discounted price, however, i'm a subscriber to sprint while the phone is with AT&T and uses a SIM card unlike my current sprint phone. Will sprint allow me to transfer my account on to this phone? Or will i have to find someone to hack the phone?

Its a samsung dualband tri-mode phone model SPH-A640 about a year and a half old. And lacks any visible SIM card. Perhaps its within the body, underneath the shell?
The phone i want to upgrade to is samsung bluetooth model SGH-i617.

No, you can't use an AT&T (GSM) phone on the Sprint (CDMA) network.

Exactly. They work on different technologies. And no, you can't hack it so that it'll work. It's something that's physically built into the phone.

ok. i've been doing some research. I have decided that now i would like to just make that Black Jack a prepaid phone. However, I'm not sure if I should purchase a new AT&T sim card from their store due to the fact that the phone might be "hot". I've noticed that i can purchase at&t sim cards from ebay at a very low price, but i'm not sure if I would be able to activate it without a help from a sales rep? Or should i go the route in which I use an online service to unlock the at&t phone and then purchase Tmobile sim cards??? Thanks for the help everyone.

If the phone is hot there's a chance the IMEI has been blocked. You won't get in trouble if you put a sim card in there, but it just won't work. Unblocking the IMEI is considerably more difficult than unlocking the phone, probably impossible.
There must be a way to tell if the IMEI is blocked...

yes. you hit my primary concern. I figured that the IMEI might give me trouble. having used a net 10 prepaid phone before. does anyone know if there is a way to tell if the IMEI is blocked? i mean surely, if there is any trouble i can just take the phone and walk away, right? but thus, my reason for avoiding the sales rep.

There's probably a website that tells you. There's one that works in Australia.
