Picking uneven flushes
    #8716504 - 08/02/08 02:25 PM (15 years, 6 months ago)

Well, it's been a while since I've posted here.  So here it goes, I gave my first go at a monotub... but I kinda messed up due to impatience.

I spawned 3 quarts of WBS into about 18 quarts of coir/hpoo/coffee/straw in a pretty good size tub (depth about 4-5").  During colonization I checked too much, so it started pinning before it was even fully colonized.  I skipped casing and just fruited, but the pins are all uneven throughout, so I have some pretty big mushies that are almost ready to pick, but there's very small ones near them that are still growing.

I want to pick them all before the veils break, so my question is should I cut the big ones at the base and remove the bases out with the clumps when the ones surrounding grow? or should I just go ahead and pick the clumps by twist and pull and say fuck it about the smaller ones?

Please let me know the best way to collect, thanks a lot!

I've done both, and it really depends on where you want to go from here.

If you didn't get a very good pinset you might just want to pick everything, rehydrate and hope for better on the second flush.  If that's too much a risk of contamination (like if your substrate still isn't fully colonized) then you should probably just cut the tops off the mature ones and allow the ones around to keep growing like you suggested.

I've found that picking fully mature mushrooms before the others are ready causes most of the others to stop growing and start tearing their veils.
