Smell in My Casings
    #8714181 - 08/01/08 09:42 PM (15 years, 8 months ago)

I over watered my tubs, so I poked a hole in the corners of them to drain everything, and the water coming out has a pretty funky smell to it. It is not quite sour like with cobweb mold. It just smells kind of like sulfur. My tubs are 100% hpoo. I am hopeful that poo water will have a foul smell to it, and that my casings aren't ruined. The colonization looks good and I cant' see anything funky yet. So I am wondering if anyone can give me any hope.

I'm not well versed enough in contamination to give you a straight answer on this, but you might want to re post this in the contamination section for better help.

a sulfur smell is more than likely a bacterial infection....git rid of it....it will not recover in a fc with this.....take it outside and bury it...it might have a better chance of recovering out there.  Are you by chance using a heating source to keep your tubs warm?  If so, this could be what is causing your problems...cakes/casings/jars do not need heat to grow or fruit.  Too much heat can cause bacteria to thrive in your fc.  kat

In the interim I found some other posts about using heat to incubate and how that can cause bacterial growth...that is exactly what I did. I didn't use it however, with my my other tubs, and they seem just fine. Well, live and learn I suppose.

On a serious note, like Tripchip said, he didnt stick his nose in the casing......he noticed the smell coming from it.  Like i said in my original post, i think it is bacteria....toss it, isolate, or plant it outside...kat

I'll have to toss 'em. I can't plant 'em outside. I live in a townhome community where dogs, or kids or someone else is likely to eat 'em if they grow. It's too bad, but a learning experience at least. thanks for your input everyone.
