i think i found myself Ganoderma lucidum
    #8713385 - 08/01/08 05:59 PM (15 years, 6 months ago)

at the end of a three hour hunt i found what i believe to be (reishi) i know there other types but isn't there rely no difference in them ? well anyway i hope i didn't find anything bad because i got my hopes up
I live in New York and I'm sure this was a hard wood, i have a few more habitat pics on another camera if needed but here i go

at first glance i thought it was just another shelf fungus(bottom left)

the thing under it is attached to the one on top

whole thing(bottom left you see another big one that i left behind)

undershot

brought it home and washed it up

undershot

the bottom one is no longer white on the under side im guessing justfrom age

thank you all, and let me know if I'm wrong, i haven't read much about it yet- how would i prepare it? i know you cant just eat it.this one weighs more then 4 and a half ounces and there more that were left behind. im sorry if thebig pics bother anyone and thank you for any comments

Yea you did. Make a tea with them. I use honey and a little sugar. Read up about them they have good medicinal properties.

It might be ganoderma tsugae depending on what type of wood it was fruiting from. But it is either one of those two, like MHBound said make a tea out of them they are extremely medicinal but taste very bitter. I use agave nectar to sweeten mine.

look at pics 1 and 3 maybe if your great with trees you could figure it out. but what would be the defence between ganoderma tsugae and lucidum i thought i read they were the same thing just in a different location.i have this in my fridge, should this be okay?

should i attempt to dry it out ?
is the older darker one on the bottom still good for a tea ?
How can i spore print these for you guys ?
how much fresh weight should i use for one person?
I am going to consume this. i will haunt the shroomery if i die.

The medicinal properties of both lucidum and tsugae are about equal there was a recent study done at it said that tsugae is slightly more medicinal but this might just be a rare occurrence.

You won't die. Those are fine to eat..Well make into a tea that is.

I have just started making these into tea, and I just sit them out and dry them out. You can make a tea with them fresh or dry. You can also save them after you make tea and use them again.

how much fresh is recommended ? is there even a recommend amount or is it just basically as much as you can handle.

is the stem just as good as the cap?

Like I said I'm new to these, but I usually take 1-2 good sized ones and make the tea. I don't always drink it at once.

I use 5-8(depending on if I find a bucnh of them or not) for about a gallon of tea, and drink it over the course of a few days.

Yes the stem is just as good as the cap.

I make tea with as many as i find each time i find them. Sometime i make it with 50per gallon or sometimes with 5-7, the 50per gallon batches are brutal to get down but i dont care i love using things from nature for medicine. You wont die dude there are no poisonous polypores, also why do you want to spore print it? It is either ganoderma lucidum or tsugae and neither is bad for you. All the ones with dark colored caps are OK to eat there just a bit older. Also i usually dont take the ones that have begun to drop like the one you pictured that has brown instead of white pores. The only reason i do this is that the younger ones are usually in better shape and cleaner. To dry them i just lay them out in the sun or anywhere but you could use a fan if ya want. I make tea out of them when they are fresh, and you can reuse them as well but if you do this its better to leave the bits in the tea after you steep it so that they dont get moldy.

If you dry it you might want to do something to kill the bugs in it first, so that it doesn't turn into a pile of sawdust on you. Putting it in a really cold freezer for a few days or zapping it in a microwave both work. Or you can grind it up make a tincture with vodka, which actually has a fairly pleasant flavor.

I boil mine for 2 hours to get all the good stuff out. Dont worry about bugs like hematite said ganodermas are hard as wood so theres no worries there.
