My new loph (and a slight concern)
    #8710926 - 08/01/08 06:46 AM (15 years, 5 months ago)

I'm pretty damn new to the whole cacti scene, but i'm loving it already (i purchased a loph and some seeds, and have already purchased a diffusa and some ariocarpus seeds).

I figured i'd post some pics of it flowering, just in case anyone is interested.

Just before it flowered

It opened slightly more than this, but i had to go out and couldn't get a photo

I have a slight issue though, the skin in a few places has gone a slightly lighter green colour... i had it outside (in hot sun) for a few days when it was flowering, so i thought it might be sunburn, but i wanted to check it's not mites or something worse.

Sorry about the photos, i only have a phone (N95.. so it could be worse, but idealy i'd like a DSLR).

Anyway, hope you enjoyed the photos, and could you give me some advice about the skin issue? or is it normal.

Cheers, Haymaker

8-9 hours of direct sunlight should be fine

in their natural habitat they tend to hide down under bushes or amongst rocks which give some shade, not to mention that they are often half buried in the ground unlike our cultivated friends.

for my specimens 5-6 hours of direct light works well, i'd like a spot that gives a little more direct light like yours though considering our sun isn't as strong as they would recieve in their natural environment...

I've had allot of trouble finding just the right amount of sun. I've burned qite a few of them. Depending on your location I believe 50/50 sun/shade is best.

However I've also found that my Peresk grafted Lophs have been able to handle more sun than the regualr Columnar grafted lophs. I've had my Loph kohresii Persk graft in full sun and it's been loving it but I've also had a few of my Columnar and hard grown lophs right next to it and they have burned pretty quick.
