BitTorrent and wireless problems

I'm experiencing a really weird problem that just doesn't make any sense to me.
Whenever I open bittorrent and start downloading, my connection slows down to a crawl and sometimes will just go out all together. It will only come back if I exit my BT client, and it takes a few minutes to come back.
This is strange because I can download a file from an FTP or HTTP server at 350KB/s and my internet only slows down a tiny bit. Even when I'm only pulling about 15KB/s on BT my connection will slow to a crawl or die.
The router my landlord uses is a Linksys WRT54G. My guess is he's never updated the firmware.
Why would this happen though? Could it be because I have so many open connections to peers at once?

That would be my guess... along with disconnected peers that keep trying to reconnect for a few minutes after you stop the transfers.
They had the same problem in the early days of the web. The original web servers required the client to open a new connection for each piece of content. On a typical web page, that might result in 50 or more connections being created, one for each image. The overhead of creating and closing new connections would kill web servers for busy sites. The changed the spec so that a single connection could transfer multiple object types and the problem went away. (Unfortunately, the nature of torrent doesn't allow for an easy fix like this...)

Ah ha, so my suspicious might be correct.
I've never had this problem before when using torrents, even on a slower 1.5mbps DSL line. Then again I can't recall ever torrenting over a wireless connection. Do you think it's the router or a problem with the wireless, or perhaps both? Is it possible a firmware upgrade may fix it?
I think it's about time I get my landlord to run that damn ethernet cable. Think that might solve my problem?

I use wireless with heavy torrent traffic and I have no problems. I use a 108Mb router with a cable connection and I'll have many open connections at any given time. One thing you may want to do is throttle the upload bandwidth on each torrent your seeding to say 25kB. If I'm uploading over about 150kB my internet will definetly slow down but it never drops. It may just be an old, crappy linksys too.

I forgot to mention that I thought upload speed might be the problem (has been in the past with DSL), so I limited it to 3KB/s as a test... Still, same problem.

If it's totally dropping your internet connection it's a good chance that it's the router. Ask your landlord if you can flash it with a dd-wrt firmware.

-Your router may not be able to handle so much traffic at once. Do you have a lot of things downloading?
-PG2 your connection and make sure you accept only encrypted peers.
-Change your port number because your ISP may be traffic shaping your connection.
-If all else fails buy some service for a VPN.

Look on the Azureus bad routers list and see if yours is on there. Check if there's an option in your router (probably under NAT settings) to change the TCP idle timeout and default NAT age and lower them to something like 3600 sec and 240 sec respectively. But yeah probably just get a new router with good reviews is the best advice.

Nice Ythan! I was reading the list of routers and sure enough... WRT54G is on there. Balls. I'm going to try to update the firmware and see if that fixes it.

That's what I was gonna suggest.
There's a couple settings that dd-wrt for wrt54g routers allows you to tweak with that allow it to handle it even better. Mines not hooked up right now, but it had something to do with the number of connections allowed before it was considered flooded. The default is way low. I'd look that up. Still, you're never gonna reach hardline speeds over wireless, so if you can steal a spool of catv, make your own cable and run it as far as you have to.

I changed max global connections to 95 and connections per torrent to 25... And my interwebs is still working! Woohoo!

definitely do dd-wrt on your router, its awesome. Works great, I used to have to reset my router every week to every couple days while torrenting. Now I have set it up with dd-wrt the last time I think I reset it was when I moved in january...so it is definitely worth the trouble to get it installed.

maybe you should just stop using it. Everything you want to download is already uploaded to http.

Uh... No it's not.
And guys, as far as the dd-wrt firmware goes, is it complicated to use? My landlord isn't computer illiterate by any means, but he knows nothing of networking, especially wireless networking. I wouldn't want to set his router up with something uber complicated and then move out in a year.

it has more features than does the stock firmware, which inherently makes it a little more complicated. But for just basic setup, which is what I am guessing he has right now, just sharing the wireless by encrypting, and really doing nothing else, then yes, it is as easy as setting up with the linksys firmware. If i ever buy another router, i will check dd-wrt site to make sure it is compatible before I buy, i feel it is that good.
