Shake Grain to Grain, & Bulk Sub

I have two questions. The first I did some grain to grain transfers. They are going great so far, at about 30 per cent colonization. Do these need to be shaken as if I had done with a multispore? I "shook" it right after I introduced the colonized grain to allow for it to be evenly distributed so I see no reason to shake at 30 per cent other than to see if I have a contamination and it will recover.
The next question deals with substrate preparation. I am ready to pasteurize it however I am going to need a lot. Cooking small bags of it at a time will not do. I purchased a large propane burner, and cut the top off of a standard keg to use as a large kettle. (near 15.5 gallons) Can I use fahsters method (http://www.shroomery.org/forums/showflat.php/Cat/0/Number/7893964/an/0/page/2) and instead of using small turkey bags use garbage bags? I like how his method doesn't allow the leeching of nutrients into the water. The only problem is I need to do a lot. Thanks in advance, -crab.

I shook g2g 1/2 pints just a day or two ago. They are nearing 90% today. I did the G2G on Sunday. I say go for it, but make sure the colonized grain is as evenly distibuted as possible. Had I paid attention to this my jars would be done today. Instead, I must wait for a few silver-dollar sized spots to finish.

They seem to be going well without a 30 percent shake. I thought you shook them to allow for even distribution. If I did a grain to grain and had colonized grain mixed well with uncolonized grain, what advantage would shaking it again do? Maybe I will shake half the jars to see which method works better.

Shaking half now would be a great experiment - please post the results.
I'm with you though - the 20-30% shake isn't needed w/ grain2grain. With MS, LC, and agar wedges, the initial 20-30% colonization will be localized. If you're seeing distributed growth, shaking will not improve anything, will take at least a day to recover, and will waste energy on recovery.

I will shake a few and update. As for me using garbage bags to load substrate in to pasteurize will this work to steam sterilize it as would Fahsters method with the turkey bags? Any advice appreciated.
