Should I Turn My Cakes Upside Down?
    #8704133 - 07/30/08 07:55 PM (16 years, 5 months ago)

I have 10 cakes in my chamber right now and they started to pin yesterday.  About 3 of the 10 cakes have pins growing at the very bottom of the cake and most of the pins are growing towards the perlite.  Would turning the cake upside down be helpful?  Thanks

is it in direct contact with the perlite or is it on something?

Make sure that your humidity is consistent throughout the full volume of the FC. Do not turn them. Make sure they are not sitting directly on the perlite, (the cakes that is). Keep the FAE going. Pictures would help. Hope this does. :goodluck:

you should have some foil or a lid, cd, or something separating it from the pearlite....

No.  They are sitting on the mason jar lids.

What are you talking about?

DonZip- My cakes sit on a wire grill, so I sometimes have pins on the bottom that grow down through the grid. When the ones on the bottom outnumber the ones on the top, I have flipped them with no apparent ill effects. Or if a side has no pins, that would work too. I am a newb, though, so if someone can tell me why that's a bad idea, I'll be happy to listen. :ooo:

Fruits growing from the bottom of the cakes are common.  Water tends to shift to the bottom of cakes from gravity, thus they pin where the moisture is.  You can make up for it a bit with a spoon of verm on top of the cake that you keep damp, as said above.

Don't flip them.

Actually I just started using lids full of wet verm and piling verm on top as well. It has so far seemingly resulted in larger shrooms.:thumbup:
