Pre-mature fruits on bulk substrate
    #8699978 - 07/29/08 10:55 PM (16 years, 5 months ago)

Hey all,

About 2 weeks ago 1.5 quarts of Ecuador WBS LC was spawned to a substrate consisting of coir, worm castings, verm, and gypsum.

I must have got antsy in waiting for the bulk to colonize, as I looked at it with room lighting to check the status a couple times.

Today, when I felt it had come time to induce fruits on this tub I opened the top to see a mostly (90%) colonized surface with a bunch of chunky, yet whispy fruits coming from the substrate.

My guess is that the room lighting from peeking on the tub triggered pinning, although they still had ceran wrap over them in colonizing conditions.

My question is, I picked all these fruits (mostly all white with mini caps) and was simply wondering if these specimens contain enough active to eat?  They appear  completely white, 'marshmellow man-esque'  with a very slight cap on the tip that is extremely small.

Are these good to eat or are they simply the myc reaching out and above the substrate in fruit appearing form?

Any feedback is greatly appreciated

Yes they contain enough to eat...Contain just as much, and more per weight.

I wouldn't have picked them they still would have matured. Pins will form in the dark, but they need light later in the cycle...And actually need it to help pinning, but its not required for a small amounts.

Be careful there have been reports where people eat pins/aborts, and assume they can handle the same amount and they blow them out of the water.
