Quick growth question
    #8699740 - 07/29/08 09:54 PM (16 years, 5 months ago)

Im a beginner when it comes to this and i just have a quick question.

For a majority of the colonization, someone I know will be storing their jars in a good sized cupboard. However, once they begin the pinning process, until fruiting, they have to provide the jars with 4-12 hours of light (Either indirect sunlight or a lamp.) According to their grow guide, incandescent light is less suitable than fluorescent. Alhough it doesn't say how significant it is.

Most of the time they will be using indirect sunlight but they want to be prepared in the event they need to hide the contents from unwanted company. This brings the question of whether or not incandecent light would be ideal?

One last question is the confirmation that you don't need light while fruiting...is this correct?

Sorry for the confusing previous post, guys.

For storing your cakes while they are colonizing you dont need light and the closet would be fine to put them in.

Would using a container be inadequate?
Using your table/closet thing would just seem really unnecessary. Get a container at any local store and do the job there, it will be a lot easier.

If you must however, it would work fine I guess. A picture of it would help a bit more.

Oh, yes, and any kind of light that is not direct sunlight should work fine.

No one said it wasn't suitable, they said it wasn't necessary.

True true.  Throw em on a closet shelf as long as it doesnt get hot.  Again the light is not needed for coloniztion but it doesnt hurt them so whatever ya want.  As for a FC yea it wont be a good idea.  Very confused with the title and the post.  Title is asking about storage but it seems in the post your asking about it as an FC.  Sorry for ramblin im really bored!

You need light while fruiting...You can check out a compact fluorescent (available at most pet stores)  When fruiting get a fluorescent light with about 6500K.

Alright sounds good...not sure why the guide doesn't say anything about a light when fruiting o.O

I could find out on my own but you seem like you know what you're talking about so I'll ask you firsthand:

How many hours of light do the cakes need per day? And after purchasing a compact fluorescent bulb...are they usable in regular lamps and whatnot or do they require a specialized one? Sorry i've never used one before heh

12/12 light cycle.

http://www.drsfostersmith.com/product/prod_display.cfm?c=3578+3733+11382&pcatid=11382 they use square pins so no you would be able to use em in a regular light socket...Cheap enough though.
