im a bit confused as to when to introduce light into the equation.
im using PF jars and they are at a week after innoc with pretty good growth.
could someone tell me when i need to set the jars in light? they are in a dark closet now.

im not sure if you're talking abotu giving them light while they are still colonizing. but as far as what i;ve always done, and i dont know of anyother way... i basically set and forget. no light. dont really use scheduled light till the fruiting stage

Your jars can be in light from the moment you inoculate them; it does no harm at all. Colonizing subs are kept covered and dark but jars can be left in a bedroom that sees light all day. ~Pixie~

Psupar, do you have any evidence of this? Are you sure it won't affect fruiting? What initiates fruiting? I've heard of people growing at 85F. Definitely not saying you're wrong, but if you are right, it'll help me out.

The following quotes are all from RogerRabbit:
"I just leave the jars and petri dishes on an open shelf in a normal room, so they get light everyday from day one. That way when I need to look at something, I just pick it up and look at it. There is no need to keep jars in the dark. That is a myth that has held over from the agaricus growers. It's very rare for a strain to pin prior to full colonization, but it does happen from time to time. No need to worry though, if you're building casings or doing grain to grain transfers, simply dump the grains and pins right into the casing or next jar of grains. The mushrooms from within a sterile jar are also sterile. Since fruits are mycelium, they clone right into the grains and don't contaminate. I've done this many times.
Also, blue light does not cause pinning. What stamets and others have found is that a light rich in the blue spectrum will tend to help give a 'better' pinset. Cultivators who have grown mushies in the same room with their garden and exposed the mushrooms to light from a MH lamp know they get somewhat better pinsets then they get with incadescent or fluorescent fixtures." -RR
"The mycelium doesn't know when you're looking at it or not. I currently have over 200 pf jars incubating on an open shelf in a room that's lit at least 18 hours per day. Light isn't a pinning trigger until the CO2 gets dumped and replaced by fresh air.
Forget that 1/2 second of light to trigger pinning. It's incorrect. Light is only a secondary pinning trigger. Full colonization and air exchange are the biggies." -RR
"Moderate indoor light has no effect on colonizing mycelium in jars or filter patch bags. I have proved this for years by using a shelf in my bedroom for incubation of dozens of species. None are affected by light during colonization. The old myth of 'incubate in total darkness' is bunk. Stamets himself has changed his advice and newer revisions of his books do not have any suggestion to incubate in darkness." -RR

i've come to the theory that cakes / wahtever, doesn't pin until it's fully colonized, ate everything up, and just has nothing left to do but propagate.
fresh air helps. Light, well, i turn it off after i get pins anyhow, they grow faster. So, when my pins are set, no more light.

Start lighting when you move your cakes into the fruiting chamber. 12/12 is recommended.
This is a handy little light that you can get in any light bulb section.
