This pf tek bashing seems to be popular. Yeah only noobs will do cakes, go for bulk if you want yield and so on...

I am glad I started with cakes. Why?

-It is a very forgiving method. Even when your sterile procedures are not good, you have a chance.

-The bio efficiency of pf cakes is unmatched.

-If you lose one cake, no big deal. If you lose your one and only big, big monotub. Game over.

-If it turns to trichoderma, while incubating no big deal, just get rid of the cake. If your monotub or bulk substrate turns green it is to late, you fucked your place with spores, have fun cleaning.

So why not go for pf tek brf the first time?  Fahtster was an eye opener for me. Look at his cakes.

I think it is  also about your frustration level.

What could happen to a person who says fuck pf tek I will do grain from the start. Well he/she could be lucky and everything is just fine. Or like agar who started with rye (But he was a very gifted man).

Or things can go wrong. Field capacity? Never heard of it...
Then you might end up with a lot of fucked up grain jars, no mushrooms, and friends asking what happened to the great mushroom project of yours.

I am still new to this hobby, but I mastered my share of cakes and cased substrates. And there  is still a lot I have to learn!
pf tek deserves more respect.

I have started using WBS to make flower instead of BRF. It dose give more nutes than BRF. Much cheaper than rice. I get 40 lb. bags at Lowe's for something like $7.

Cakes are fun but bulk gives you a much better yield.

Hold on. What? While bird seed four in pf cakes instead of brown rice flour? it gives more nutrients??? tell me more about this please. is it harder to use then brown rice flour? If some one knows of a tek please tell me. i really want to know better ways to get more nutrients in brf pf cakes.

I can try to help on this one. I believe he means as a substrate in general, WBS has more nutrients to supply then Brown Rice. I am sure you can do the same thing just get some WBS, and use it in place of BR, I don't see why it would be harder. Maybe harder on your grinder. I don't know if there is a TEK but this is your chance to turn the mycology world upside down with a new TEK for massive caps on cakes. I would suggest just trying a WBS tek. I have done both, and would give my nod to WBS although I have experienced good success with both.

Hope I helped .

OK. The thing is making cakes with WBSF is that it is cheaper than BRF you do every thing in RR cake tek except you grind up WBS and use it in place of BRF. There are a lot more nutes in WBS. I think (IMO) cakes are easier to do and you can do a lot of 1/2 pt or 1/4 pt jars in a much quicker time.

Every NOOB must learn definitions before posting. A casing is simply a non nutritious substance that provides a micro-climate for a substrate. It is not hard. A substrate is a nutritious substance that you spawn your Mycelium or spore to. In this case ground up grain. It can be any of your liking.

Once you have your fully colonized cake you have some choices 1) dunk and roll in verm. This is your casing. Put it into a terrarium and fruit it like that. Or 2) use those cakes to spawn to a bulk substrate like coir.

I recommend all first time growers to do at least 1 flush from cakes. After you have successfully harvester at least 1 flush then spawn those cakes to a bulk grow.

I have done cakes and whole grain successfully I have just recently started cakes again just to do them.

Blut I know you know you shit but I have to go against not only you but a lot of others that say potency is all genetics. It's not nutes have a lot to do with it. If you take the most potent fruit you have an clone and isolate it to what you want and then grow that out on white bleached shit  rice flour and on brown rice and on WBS you will have form, WR, shit cubies with no potency, from BR good potency, and from Wbs better potency. I have had  shrooms from one mycologist that has done that very experiment. I have read post on this forum that have talked about WR grown shrooms with zero potency.

Genetics DO play a Big part in potency but not 100% or even close to it. Differences in grains is not much but it is there.

I hope this didn't come across as me sounding like a DICK, and I hope it explained it to you.
