My pedros are sick, pics included
    #8692844 - 07/28/08 03:28 PM (15 years, 8 months ago)

Ive had these for a little over a year now and they were healthy for most of that time. After spending the winter inside they developed spots around the areoles and then i noticed a discoloration at and below the soil line. They are not soft and mushy but growth has pretty much stopped while my other pedros are growing at a nice rate. Any ideas as to what i can do to save these guys?

Below the soil there´s no light. Hence there´s no green, no clorophyll needed there.

its hard to see in the picture but there are orangeish spots around most of the areoles one one side, could this be sun burn? The reason i suspected a problem was they lost a lot of their deep green color and stopped growing. I got these from royer last may and they looked like top quality specimen grade cacti. If those spots are nothing serious then i'm just over reacting, I hate to lose plants when it could have been prevented. Thats for the responses:)

Did you get them as unrooted cuttings? The yellow below the soil line is normal, if they were taken from cuttings it would have taken a while for them to become yellow, making you think something was wrong. I thought the same thing about my pedros.

yeah they were unrooted cuttings, the yellowing no longer worries me but the spots still do. They have only been fertilized once and it was after the spots appeared i fed them with tetracycle liquid worm poop. I'm going to repot them but I'm having the hardest time finding certified organic soil anywhere. Fox farm simply dosn't exist in NJ

I wouldnt be too concerned about the spots, as long as they are not mushy and soft.

Make your own organic soil.
Just dont add chemical ferts

thanks satyr. I actually do make my own soil but I just transplanted a dozen tomato plants into 5 gal. buckets so now i'm completly out of good dirt, I used up all my compost and pre-cleaned top soil. Im ready to just give in and buy a few bags until more compost is ready.

It wouldnt hurt, depending on your motives.
People consume foods grown in synthetic, chemical ridden soil everyday, a little in your pedros substrate wouldnt hurt them or you.
Do you have a home depot or lowes? If you do,Miracle Grow has an organic potting soil that is excellent, and they should carry it.

Yeah big box stores are everywhere where i live (nj). I have seen the miracle grow "organic" soil but i dont really trust that claim too much, I know it has a wetting agent in it and I remember seeing other questionable stuff after reading the label. But the search for fox farm soil led me to finding a hydro shop that i had no idea existed about 30 min. from where i live. Do you use the miracle grow organic? I'll give it a shot if its ok, its a lot cheaper than fox farm.

One of my pedros has similar problems to yours, it has small orange spots/lumps but i think they are just scars - im not worried about them. It is yellow and growing really slow but is showing no sign of rot - it has plenty of natural ferts (new potting mix and sheep 'pellets'. Its very weird.

They're fine, just put em back in the dirt and let em do their thing.

I mostly prefer to make my own soil, but yes, Ive used the miracle grow organic on numerous occasions. My Salvias are thriving in it.
And I also did some research a while back on the wetting agent. Apparently, it is something derived from the yucca plant, so it is organic.
