leaking pressure cooker
    #8695664 - 07/29/08 01:32 AM (16 years, 5 months ago)

i pcooked 3 jars today, and tomorrow i might inocc, but when i was pcooking i noticed water coming out around close to the handle near the rim, usally i get steam by the handel but this time it never buildt pressure. meaning after 15 mins on high the valve never shot out steady steam, i instead went ahead and put the cap on in hopes it would build anyway, but instead it just spit water out where it usally just steamed. so i went ahead and for 1 hr ran the cycle, because when i tryed to lift the cap i did notice there was some pressure. my question is would this be enuff for the steril process?  or should i recook the same jars with another cooker?

well here is the deal if you have some thing touching the valve that locks your handle in place it will not seat right ive had this problem. You have to make sure that nothing is next to the valve, if it is even touching it it will not let your pc lock tight.

Playing with a pressure cooker while you're in any state but sober is probably not wise, but back to the original question ...

Whether you need to re-sterilize depends on what you were sterilizing.  If you're using vermiculite and rice flour in your substrate jars, you're probably safe.  Many people simply boil jars of that type and have good results with it.  Many people on here insist that a pressure cooker is only necessary for whole grains.

If you don't have a seal, you don't have pressure and you're just boiling.  The straight fact of the matter is that contamination rates will always be higher from boiling than from pressurized sterilization, but with a loose material like vermiculite and flour, the difference is likely to be very small.

In my personal opinion, you're safe to inoculate the jars, but something's wrong with your pressure cooker.  It could be the handle assembly (I've seen several cheap ones break under rough handling) or the gasket.

No there is a little valve that sits next to the lock by your handle it goes up and down if you look under your lid you will see it. its a little up and down pressure valve

No you can easily obstruct your seal with whats inside you gotta look at what they are touching. there are valves under the lid if get obstructed will not work and can cause a leak

my 22qt mirror leaks water like you said, I just put in a little extra and wait a little longer till I get that steady flow of steam, never try to PC anything until you see a heavy flow of steam escaping for five minutes.

It should still be good to use just add abit more water next time.

My pressure cooker is from the 60's. It has been handed down in my wifes family for preserves and beans and shit.

I used it for a year, then I got steam coming out the side, then water drops then It would not hold pressure.

I simply replaced the gasket and it works like a dream now.

i just inspected my cooker and on the side of the leak i noticed under the handle is a lever connected to a pressure valve, im almost positve this is where the culprit is, what is this for and how is it used? i already have a little red rubber pressure release thingy on the lid should i tape up the one on the handle?
