Mmmm.. look at that green. edible mushrooms are not impossible?

So this is my contaminated jars from my 1st attempt.
To read all the many ways I may have messed up.... http://www.shroomery.org/forums/showflat.php/Cat/0/Number/8682568/an/0/page/0
Here is the pictures of the contaminated jars on day six.
http://www2.zoto.com/masarap/img/600x600x2/b1408c0fd2b61198c39338613bda8315.jpg http://www2.zoto.com/masarap/img/600x600x2/f27c8b3c59934da19b088d051e923707.jpg
I already inoculated a fresh 5 new jars (being much more careful, using the pressure cooker properly!, and respecting all aspects of sterility) but Im not so sure I want to just toss these old jars.
After reading a lot of posts of people asking the question of safety of eating mushrooms from contaminated cakes Im kinda leaning towards keeping these jars to continue towards fruiting.
From what I have read as long as the fruit isnt black or sick looking its alright to eat, mold is harmless and only bacteria is what causes illness.
RR says:
Quote:
This has been posted and answered dozens of times. There is absolutely NOTHING toxic to humans in green molds. Dont sniff the spores as if they were a line of coke, but eating mushrooms from a cake or casing with green mold is totally harmless. Enjoy your harvest. RR
From this post http://www.shroomery.org/forums/showflat.php/Number/4247313#Post4247313
So what Im thinking instead of just tossing these jars in the trash maybe do an extremely careful grow to prevent spreading (outside my house or in garage) and IF any healthy looking mushrooms grow I would harvest and eat them.
From what I understand the integrity of the crop is compromised by this green stuff but growing edible mushrooms is not impossible.

I'd have to assume what the wabbit was speaking of, is regarding mushrooms growing off a cake or casing that has our mortal enemy spreading on it after the mycelium has spread throughout the growth medium. Meaning, it needs to colonize, contaminate, then grow mushrooms around the trich.
You can't solve an equation with the wrong numbers, but starting with the right numbers, you can work your way through it - the same applies for mushrooms. If you start with the wrong beginning, you cannot work your way through the problem, so I'd just toss them - Or, put them in a paper lunch bag and light them on fire on some assholes doorstep, ring the doorbell, and run. Makes it funner if your growing with cow shit, but whatever makes you feel better about failure
Bottom line - Toss them. Trying to fruit contamination will only result in contamination.

I'm sorry, but I'll have to disagree with RR on this one.
How can you say no green mold is unsafe? Thats just not very realistic advice IMO. I have had a blood infection from some type of bacteria, and while it wasn't from mushrooms, I don't think its something to play with. It can kill you overnight, and nobody will ever know...You will never know. I felt like I had the flu, and couldn't get warm. Next morning I went to the doctor, and I was rushed to the operating room. Pretty stupid to play around with.
I could have...Either died, it happens all the time from things like this, and you don't even know its coming. And I almost like my leg after the infected got into my knee. I was lucky. Often times it attacks your lungs etc.

dont fruit something with mold. if the mold growth happens WHILE fruiting then harvest as soon as you can. i wouldnt birth a moldy cake though. id say if you already have fruits and you notice a mold coming on then the fruits that arent physically touching the mold might be ok. personaly would discard anything that didnt look right and/or moldy. id only have to words to say if i saw mold..
start over
thats my opinoin ofcourse...

You got sick from bacteria not a mold. They are 2 different things. Some molds like Fusarium CAN make you very sick. However for the most part green molds are harmless, they don't produce toxins and are not infectious to a healthy person. People with compromised immune systems (HIV/AIDS, recent organ transplant/immuno-suppressant drug users) should be very careful around ANY large mass of mold/bacteria.
To The OP:
I agree with c1dh3d. If a fruiting cake/casing shows green mold after or during fruiting it is fine to pick and eat the fruit which do not have mold growing directly on them. Its always a bad idea to birth a jar with visible contamination. Throw the jars out.

Take into consideration this before you make any decisions.

Seuss said: Just because something is green does not mean that it is trich. Perhaps it is penicillium chrysogenum. It would suck to eat those shrooms if you happen to be allergic to penicillin. Even if the contam is on the opposite side of the casing, the system is closed and toxins will tend to concentrate in the fruitbodies.
You cannot positively identify a microbe from a macroscopic picture, thus you are assuming it is safe without having anyway of knowing. It may be safe, but I know for certain that it is contaminated. I don't know what the contamination is, thus I would never consider eating fruit from that casing.

What is it with this place and bad analogies/false comparisons? These have got to be at least the third and fourth one I read this week and I really don't read a whole lot of threads here. Growing mushrooms isn't really all that much like math and fungus and bacteria are not the same thing.
That said, toss the jars. If your mycelium already had the advantage of a decent sized colony and then it got contaminated, then I would say go for fruiting since you would probably get some decent fruits before the whole thing went bad. After looking at your pictures, I think that the contamination has the upper hand and the mycelium is never going to get a chance to develop.
Also I have a comment on your previous post. I never inoculate with a hood/chamber, never wear gloves and never heat the needle. I wash my hands before doing anything and then just wipe the needle off with alcohol before each injection. My overall contamination rate is well under 10%, probably even less than 5% (I really don't remember all the jars I have done). Being in a basement, which is usually not the cleanest place in the house and one of the better places for mold, was most likely your biggest problem with that part of the process.

bacteria isn't mold. those are two different things. i doubt you had a blood infection from mold.
green mold is non-toxic to humans.

You can't identify a contamination by its color. No way.
If it has mold I'm willing to bet there is some bacteria(not the good kind) roaming through those jars. That was my point. I wouldn't eat them. Just not a good idea IMO.
For the 1000 good ones there is one bad one somewhere, and its likely to get you very very sick.

mold is not bacteria. and mold does not cause bacteria. they aren't related in any way.

I didn't say that. I was saying that if a jar isn't sterile, which is obviously isn't with mold growing in it...Then there is a good chance that somewhere in that jar there is some other nasty shit that you can't see.
Oh well. I just wouldn't do it after I had that happen to me. Who knows.

What happened to you probably has a lot more to do with the way you say you keep your fridge and little to nothing to do with contaminated jars.

Actually I got my infection from a hospital.
I made an observation that if you have mold growing in your jars there is no telling what else is lurking in them. I wouldn't fuck with them. I rarely have a contaminate...To be honest I haven't had one in a long time, but thats not the point here. Whether to do this or do that, its about how sick it can make you. So for all of you who think its no big deal...Keep playing around, and who knows you might not ever have what happened to others happen to you...But you might, and you could lose your life, your arm/leg, or be paralyzed. Its not something to just say oh its fine let me eat it anyway.
You gotta remember that you are growing fungus, and other fungus are just as likely to be around and you have no way to ID what it is. To say you can is BS, and you know it. Just because its green doesn't mean its harmless I mean c'mon.
I was just making an observation.

Just to throw this out there:
My first casing attempt went from cobweb mold, to completely green over a span of a week or so. I had just forgot about it in my closet, until one day I remembered I needed to toss it out. When I went to pick it up, I noticed a single mushroom growing in the middle of this sea of contamination. The mushroom itself looked fine, no odd colors or anything, so I picked it and ate it.
No ailments, bad side effects, not even an upset stomach. Thought I'd throw that out there.
