perlite..cakes...need help
    #8693073 - 07/28/08 04:26 PM (16 years, 5 months ago)

ok well ive read a few different teks and i have decided id rather not use cakes but some alternative. i read one tek (which i cannot find again) where the inoculated substrate was shaken a bit once mycelium starts to grow to even it out, then dumped on top of perlite. it seems to me in the different teks ive read people use the canning jars for incubation but sometimes theyre cakes and sometimes they are not. can someone please explain to me how to do this WITHOUT actual cakes? it seems like the same process both ways but i cant figure out what the difference is. i guess im asking what substrate ingredients make cakes and which are loose material.
thanks guys.

Here's what you should do to get ready to grow mushrooms. Go to your Mom & Dad's kitchen cabinets. There you will probably find a cupboard with groceries in it that they bought with their hard earned money. See if you can find a cake mix. Betty Crocker would be great, but Duncan Hines or anything will do. There's probably one in there your Mom was saving for your birthday. Take the cake mix out of the cupboard. On the back of the box, you will find instructions on how to make the cake. It will require some other ingredients, and the ability to measure and/or count those ingredients. Follow the instructions to make the cake.

If at the end of this process you end up with some type of edible baked good, you may indeed have the skills necessary to grow mushrooms. Additionally, you can frost your cake and decorate it with something like, "I :heart: you Mom & Dad" and leave it on the counter for your folks. They will be so happy to see that their drug addled attention deficit disorder child actually did something nice for them, they may stay off your case for a couple of days.

Now, find some instructions (also called a Tek) on how to grow mushrooms. You will find many such instructions written in a very clear and concise manner at www.shroomery.org.

Now do what you did with the cake and grow some mushrooms.

Good Luck! :smile::thumbup:

I stand by my method. Your original post amounts to, "Hey, I just set foot on this website and read about four posts. Hey, can you explain to me how to grow mushrooms?"

There is so much information on here about how to grow mushrooms, it's laughable. Your posts indicates you did virtually no reasearch at all. If you want respect here, you need to do at least a little bit of homework.

Yes. However you cannot make a cake. You will have to make either pancakes, biscuits, or waffles. Technically, Bisquick is a more advanced Tek since you can make multiple recipes with it. Try to stick to the basics and don't get in over your head.

Do we really need another, "Hey, I just put my biscuits in the oven 15 minutes ago and they still haven't risen" post?
