Instant Cabbie Karma
    #8692334 - 07/28/08 02:55 PM (13 years, 2 months ago)

So last night I went out and saw !!! in concert - great show, albeit way too short. I got pretty goddamn drunk. A double tequila shot to start things off and then four or five beers, lots of dancing, not much water. I took a cab home.  Now, ever since I started working in the service industry, I really appreciate tipping more, and appreciate the services of those people who survive off of tips. When I'm drunk, I turn from a good tipper into a great tipper. I had a $19 cab ride home, and I gave the cabbie $25 and told him to keep the change.

Then I got home.  And I wanted to see if AniNator, who had come with me to the show, had gotten home safe. But I could not find my cell phone anywhere. It only took a couple of minutes for me to realize that I had left it in the cab, and fuck was I bummed. What a pain in the ass this was going to be! Have to call the company, suspend the service, get a new phone, and then find out all those phone #'s again and undoubtedly lose a few. I checked my pockets - I had one quarter.

I went to the corner of my block to a payphone and dialed my cell phone. As soon as it clicked into voicemail I hung up, and got my quarter back. I did this six times. I almost went home then, and then decided some people seem to think seven's a lucky number, so what the hell? I called my phone again.

The cabbie answers! He's an Arab, thick accent, but I can make out most of what he is saying.

"Yes hello?!"

"I left my phone in your cab!"

"Yes, I know! I'm all the way in Woodside [a far ride from where I live] waiting for a spot to open in the garage so I can go home...i don't know, man, what you want me to do?"

"Well is there any chance you'd wanna drive it back to where you dropped me off?"

"I don't know buddy, I'm gonna get a spot here soon...you know it's a far drive, that would be a $30 fare or something..you gave me good tip though, I know you are good man."

"I'll give you another tip, I'll give you a $20 bill if you bring it to me."

"...I don't know buddy..it's late. [It's about 1:30 AM at this point.] But you gave me very good tip...maybe if I do this for you, God will do something good for me."

"Yes, please, I would be so thankful!"

"Okay okay i come, you wait outside where I drop you off."

I wait 20 minutes. Cab pulls up. Driver holds his hand out the window, and hands me my cell phone AND my beloved lil orange lighter, too! I hand him a $20 bill, clap him on the shoulder, and tell him he's a good man. We wish each other a good night.

Cab ride + original tip + $20 for bringing me my phone - $45

Not having to deal with the bullshit of getting a new one and trying to dig up all those phone numbers - priceless.

You and the cabbie are good people :o
Quite lucky that he decided to return the favor.

guy left his wallet in my cab, several hundred bucks in it, I went
to the address the next evening before I started my shift and
delivered it to him, cash still intact, he offered me money but I
politely refused, glad you got your phone back but I see it as
somewhat extorting cash from you to return it

not a saint, just understand that people work hard for what they
earn and me keeping the guys money could have put him in a
financial bind, suppose it was rent and utilities for the guy,
what if he had a family to support as well

Enjoyed the read.

I wonder whether or not the arab would have been so kind to return your phone if you had never tipped him that night?

He probably would not have. That's a part of the story...what goes around comes around...and it all starts with Y-O-U.

I dropped my wallet in a parking garage in the middle of downtown Baltimore.

One of the maintenance staff for the garage found it, then took the time to call my bank, who then called me and hang onto it until I returned to the garage to pick it back up.

Nothing was missing.
