What if I were to use Alfalfa hay, which I can get right now, pre shreaded and ready to use?

Anyone have experience with Alfalfa hay?

In reply to:

Alfalfa hay

Too nutritious and contaminates very easily.
Straw doesn't contain as much vegitative matter
on its stalks. When using straw, try to remove as
much of the grain heads as possible, as these
tend to promote contamination. Good luck.

Actually..... I use it for Pan. cultivation and it works fine. You can get it at the pet store in the gerbil-food section. You can get it at walmart cheap as shit--on another note... go to their craft section and get the little bails of straw that they carry, they also work well. They are already chopped small enough to use.

Hay has seeds in it, therefore more nutrients and more contam risk. Also, the added nitrogen causes thermogenesis. Most peoples problems with hay, esp. alfalfa, will be bacterial contamination due to the increased nutrients as well as the increased substrate temps.

I'd stay away from it, unless you want to supplement straw with about 20% hay, but I wouldn't recomend it at all.

PM me with any cultivation questions.

I just looked at my profile and realized I had a website at one point in time on geocities, it's not there anymore and I have no idea what I had on it. Anybody remember my website from several years aga? PM if so please.
