I have made a breakthrough...
    #868795 - 09/07/02 01:10 PM (14 years, 3 months ago)

I am now useing one more sub genra term to further my short list of computer based music descriptions.

And the winner is... "Electronica"

Here is a word that I have stayed away from for a long time believing that it simply falles into the category of "breakbeat" because the rhythem truely is a breakbeat...
Now with Omar Santana, Chemical Brothers and artists of that sort making somewhat of the rock and roll of breakbeats I am separateing that style into electronica, much like Techno was separated from House because of the faster rhythem, diferent bass and lack of that soulfull feel.

So here is my list as it stands today.

House. - Solid 4/4 rhythem, around 120 bpm with a soulfull feel and usualy a good use of percussion accompanyment....

Techno - Solid 4/4 rhythem, above 120bpm with a real energy driven bass tone and chemical overlays. Focus is on the pounding bass more than anything.

Breakbeat - Broken rhythem, varriable bpm from 110 to 140 with a style rangeing from soulfull and funky to simply, get yo ass up and dance. This is a wide class using percussion or not but effect is still the same given that the rhythem is a broken beat....

Electronica - Broken rhythem, fast bpm 140+ with real "electronic" overlays. The rock and roll of breakbeat it lacks soul and deep groove feeling but instead it has a real shout in your face, Im gona make your feet move quality..

Drum-N-Bass - We should all know what this is by now. Oooh and Jungle IS Drum-N-Bass no matter how you want to look at it.

Acid Jazz - Acid Jazz can haouse several rhythems under its belt, House, Breaks and even jungle can be made into Acid Jazz, I also group Trip Hop and all DownTempo into this category. Does not nesicarily need to feel "Jazzy" to be Acid Jazz.
Sometimes I will call it Downtempo.

Ambient - Lacks a rhythem or tempo and is, well, Ambient.

As for Trance. People Trance IS Techno. 8 years ago people were making "trance" but nobody ever heard that word. Today people are still making techno but now call it "Trance".. I think it was origionaly a marketing scheme that got out of hand...

i've never liked the word 'electronica' either, but sometimes that's really all there is to say for some songs... the techno/trance thing, technically i see your point, but there really is a different feeling that seperates the two from each other. it's an easy distinction to make so why not make it?

Im too stubborn.
Besides Ive heard stuff several years ago that was "trance" but since the word hasnt been invented yet as a genre, It was called techno. So techno it will stay for me....

I do see your point, trance has come a long way, defineing its self as a genre all its own. Theirs just too much crap trance out their for me to believe that people are taking it serriously..

"Drum-N-Bass - We should all know what this is by now. Oooh and Jungle IS Drum-N-Bass no matter how you want to look at it."

ummm, ok, why exactly do you think everybody knows what drum&bass is, and then go explaining what trance is?

Do they play drum&bass on the radio over there all the time or somethin? Is it a big thing over there?
I cant imagine that at all, since DnB is a pretty underground scene over here and apart from 'kosheen' i have never ever heard or seen DnB on the national radio/tv. So what on earth are you talking about? Sounds to me like you just hate the music. Oooh and you're right, maybe jungle is pretty much the same as DnB but can you seriously listen to, lets say, a happy crappy trance song by DJ johan gielen for example, then to some real music by, lets say, Jeff Mills, and claim its the same kind of music? Techno is techno and trance is some sort of mutation, some kind of soft and cheesy shit for people who do want little basslines, but more melodies.

As for electronica, you dont even have a clue. You dont even understand how broad this genre is and you say breakbeat is a main category. listen to Boards of Canada, Aphex Twin's ambient stuff (oh yes, ambient is electronica and not a genre on its own), Plaid etc.. and tell me thats straight breakbeat. Some people refer to this music as IDM.

It would have been nice if you had given some examples of well known artists for every genre you mentioned, because it seems to me you did not research a whole lot and decided to stereotype the shit out of everything instead.

oh and hey you forgot 'gabba' music!

"Techno is techno and trance is some sort of mutation, some kind of soft and cheesy shit for people who do want little basslines, but more melodies."

not all trance is soft and cheezy, plenty of it is very dark and aggressive. i think people have a problem of thinking of one style of trance when they think of the term, but there ARE other styles that actually do justice to the word... i'm sure you know that know though.

you're reply sounded pretty hateful, try to loosen up a bit. we're all in this thread because we love the music, and if i remember right, gabba is quite fond of dnb, but i'll let him verify that.

*loosens up a bit*

I'm sorry for sounding hateful, but i'm a serious d&b fan and i hate to see when somebody speaks of it like its not even worth describing, then goes on describing other music and creating genres and subgenres by him/herself.

And you're right, not all trance is shit. I just hate most trance because its all you hear on the radio these days, and then it really always is the cheesy happy kind. But I do happen to enjoy Paul Van Dijk's music, or at least the few tracks i've heard.

Could you recommend any of this dark and aggresive trance you speak of? Sounds interesting.

>>>>> Do they play drum&bass on the radio over there all the time or somethin? Is it a big thing over there? <<<<<

Ummm Yah... Its huge... Not everyone knows it but if you listen around you its everywhere. Its the background music behind thousands of TV comercials and radio spots, not to mention most college radio stations have drum-n-bass blocks. Just about every artist has had their works made into a jungle remix and hip hop/rap is really takeing over with some tight jungle...
I feel soo sorry for you to claim that your are such a HUGE drum-n-bass fan yet you dont know any of this..

>>>>> As for electronica, you dont even have a clue. You dont even understand how broad this genre is and you say breakbeat is a main category. <<<<<

With you being from another country Im not gona put you down too much on this one. Ill just say that if the rhythem is not 4/4 or any even varriable of that then it is a "broken rhythem", hence a BreakBeat. Electronica while technicly is a breakbeat as defined by its rhythem or "signature" it is definetly its own style and not some cheesy knock off style either.

>>>>> Could you recommend any of this dark and aggresive trance you speak of? Sounds interesting. <<<<<

If you didnt even know that this stuff exists then maybe you should just stay quiet about this subject.

Funny.. you didnt even notice the link in my sig. Some top notch Netherlands Jungle Djs and producers on the Fiets crew which is primarily Netherlands folk.......

And you say your a fan... Tisk tisk...

Hahaha.. you make me laugh, if it has no beat then it is ambient and yes it is a genre on its own. I have his ambient stuff, and jus drum-n-bass stuff and his techno stuff which is primarilywhat he does, techno. If you can, try and find his Clear Label. Its only found in record stores and is usualy live set recordings or unreleased stuff he produced...

OOoh... and I never forget about Gabber.

first of all, why the fuck would i care about drum&bass in the U.S. Yeah duh, if u know where to look, d&b is everywhere. good fucking point man.

on a lighter note, obviously we have different opionions on how broad the genre electronica is, so lets not both claim we're right.

then:

"With you being from another country Im not gona put you down too much on this one"

first, you say this, as if all other countries are inferior in the aspect of electronic music, then you tell me about the signature link, which i did notice actually. I cant imagine if you actually have anything to do with that site that you missed the fact that the most and the best (imo) techno, drum&bass and other electronica is made in europe, so i dont really get that comment.

If you read carefully you should have noticed i was replying to smack about the trance subject so why dont you shut the fuck up about that instead.

as for me claiming to be a fan, if you think i give as much as half a fuck if you believe me or not, think again. I'm sitting here with all the muscles in my body still aching from dancing for 6 hours straight to seriously fucking loud drum&bass, played by some top notch dj's and producers from bassdrive.com, timecode audio and beezwax label. Bet you dont get to see them a lot over there.

And about this so called 'clear label' . I dont have a clue what you're on about. Aphex Twin is on REPHLEX and WARP, and bootleg labels arent his. If YOU can, try and find more info on aphex by checking aphextwin.nu

Hahahah... You sound just like every other stupid rave kid who has been sold the ravers handbook.

>>>>> first of all, why the fuck would i care about drum&bass in the U.S. <<<<<

Cus your such a HUGE fan. Sound pretty narrow minded to be a fan...

As for the clear label... Its out their and its distribution is authorized by him and you can find it if you look.

How did you get to be so bitter anyway? How did you ever turn my words around into some sort of personal attack on you or your country? Maybe you should lay off the dope...

for your information, we know no such thing as 'ravers' over here. Thats one of those typical u.s things. Besides, drum&bass isnt supposed to be a raver thing, so maybe you go to the wrong places?

Another sad thing, the u.s means jack shit when it comes to d&b so thats why i dont care to find out about that scene. It really doesnt mean shit that you may have big radioshows or parties with tons of people. Its about the producers, dj's and parties with people who are there for the music and not to get fucked up.

I just got to be so bitter, because you sound like a fucking idiot (you might want to run a spell checker too)and talk a crapload of shit.

thanks for the tip on the clear label though

DRUM AND BASS RULES!
sorry, I couldn't resist
any junglists out there?
------------------------------
You also forgot about Hardcore Techno.
4/4 beat, ranges from 150+ bpm, originated from the UK, branched off of techno around the same time jungle did in the early 90's, 2 different kinds of hardcore, theres the Gabber (dark, evil) and then theres Happy Hardcore (dont need to describe it)...

And I disagree..
Trance is not Techno

Trance is House music
as is 'most' electronic music

....note...i did not say all.....

sorry dude, i have to disagree. trance is not techno. trance is not house (although it evolved from house). trance is its own genre. also, aphex twin does not make techno, he makes "IDM", or intelligent dance music. i know there are a lot of groans from me mentioning this genre, but it's true. you can't call what he does techno... listen to some dj sets by richie hawtin (plastikman) and you'll see what techno really is...

What the hell...we really shouldnt disagree....
cause we are really all right....
Trance is House is Techno....and each are their own thing

House is a 4/4 beat...and it is Deemed house music because of how it is made...
something that people have created from a 'House' with more feeling and more
vibe...and not as 'Studio' 'Big Record Label' productions....

of course thats how it was years ago.....

Dont listen to me...I havent slept yet!!

EDIT: I got it! now I remember why I believe that its mostly house......
because house goes beyond being a form of music....it represents a culture...
and most of this music really surrounds this type of house culture...but they have different names and different unique styles

Detroit House is the best...

Moodey Man, man....

And I agree with everyone.. Their are diferent styles and diferent regional diferences within a genre.
Years ago I added techno to my list, separetly from House because it was just getting diferent in several ways.
Ive now done the same with US electronica because it has separated its self from breakbeat in much the same way techno did from house.
For me, trance will always be a subgenre of techno, never fully distanceing its self from techno.
