How much cake to inoc grain?
    #8683518 - 07/26/08 09:44 AM (16 years, 5 months ago)

Indeed. Only syringes I have right now are GT but I want to get some EQ goin on popcorn. Got some freshly colonized cakes, gonna crumble them but I do not know how much to use for a cake to grain transfer, since they are 2/3rds vermiculite. How many tablespoons of cake per pint of grain? Never done a cake->grain before.

a table spoon would be fin.. half a cake would probably be quicker for the next grain to colonize, put in what you have.

Brf to grain is not a recommended procedure.  It will be awfully hard to get the vermiculite filter off and still keep the cake sterile during the transfer. You can try water injection to the cake, and then draw the water back out to inject the grains, but even that tek can be iffy without a flow hood.

Tyty I cut the top of the cakes off where the verm was, and soaked them in peroxide/water for half an hour. Nothing fizzed up so I doubt there was any cobweb, the myc was very healthy looking so no contams in the cake either. The whole transfer process took 2 seconds, did it in a drawer that was nuked with bleach. Pretty much the same way I spawned the coir with brf except no touching/mixing with the hands whatsoever. The coir definitely didn't contam and is very nicely colonized.

I should prolly know this but, Is PC'd grain more prone to contamination than nuked coir? And what will the peroxide/water mix do to the myc's ability to colonize the grain?

Grain is WAY more contam prone than coir.

You should have used a glove box to prevent airflow.

Spending 20 minutes to make a still air box is a good idea. I keep my room clean with mad OCD skills, been lucky so far with every substrate kept in the room. I have a small hepa from the thrift shop, and also an ionizer when inoculating anything, and keep them right next to colonizing jars and meh spore print box.
