cofused with measurements for malt./dextrose lc
    #8685818 - 07/26/08 09:04 PM (16 years, 5 months ago)

Okay i just went ahead and washed/cleaned to pint jars and lids. i then placed both jars with lids on and fastened and pced them for 20 minutes 15 psi for cleaning.

i am now ready to make two lc's

1st lc will be made with one packet of turbinado sugar and 150ml of distilled water. i have had success with this so i am not worried of this lc tek

2nd lc i am worried about... cannot find consistant results or answers and am a bit confused..

i have read 1/2 teaspoon malt per 250ml water, i have read 1 tablespoon of malt and dextrose per 250ml of water... then i have read 50/50 malt/dextrose per 250ml also 500ml
my question is what is the correct quantities to use correctly???
i am not making a huge load of lc's so something small i was planning on making 1 pint jar of lc so either go with 250ml or if i have to 500ml...

if i go with 250ml what measurements do i use of malt and dextrose?

so i was going to go with the 1

Heres what i use...

5000ml water (6 lc's)
1 tsp turbinado
1 tsp karo/honey
1 tsp malt
1 tbls Dextrose

Works great every time... and its a 1% malt and 2% sugar solution

i cannot believe i was trying to make this harder then it is already lol... another question though..

I bought a 5 cup coffee maker just for doing lc's.  if i go ahead and heat the distilled water and mix in the dry ingredients and stir it up. Then use two coffee filters in the coffee maker, run that mixture through the coffee maker. Then either right into the jars or filter liquid through coffee filter(s) into the jars.

See i have 2 lc's i tried out with using 3 coffee filters and 1 tbs of malt and dextrose into the filters i didnt stir it in the water first. so i thought if i tried it that way i would have better results on the clearer side then this last run cause i can see i will have trouble seeing the mycelium starting up.      Does anyone know the best method?

Add your malt by steeping in a (2-3) coffee filter(s) if your worried about it... but IMO it sounds like you just used too much malt/dex before

when you do a lc with malt do you have to use dextrose? i have read of people only doing malt without dextrose. i was gonna use 1 gram of malt to 500ml distilled water but i have read that you should use dextrose

Sugars are the food source for the Mycelium, so sugar should never be omitted.
Dextrose or karo or honey or turbinado is all fine to use...

1g malt to 500ml water is a 4% ratio and too high, tho it has been recommended up to 4% I say stick with 1%... It gets results

Now, I believe its time to adventure into the Wonderful World of the Search Function.
All of your answers can be found there, most subjects have been covered time and time again.

The Malt/Dex LC ratios are always hard to read thru because everybody does it differently and theres no "concrete" Method to making LC's, a lot of methods work and produce great results. Now's the time for you to find the Method that works best for you.

You can always look into FastFred's Media Cookbook for Agar and LC recipes, and theres tons of TEK's for Lids and more advanced TEK's than PF, some are questionable, some are "solid" ... You will find whats right for you.
