Question on specifics of bulk cultivation
    #8685339 - 07/26/08 07:04 PM (16 years, 5 months ago)

I have compost on the way from www.highmountaincompost.com, so it comes ready to be mixed right away with grain spawn, but Im having some trouble finding answers to specific conditions to incubate the mix in.

Incubation - Ive heard the compost will raise the temp by 10ish degrees in the container. Would it be safe to assume if I mix the compost and spawn in a big tupperware bowl with a lid and put it on a shelf at room temp, that it would hold around 80 degrees without even needing an incubator or outter container to control temp?

Moisture - The compost should be coming at field capacity, so beyond that should I have to worry about misting the mixture at all throughout the colonization of the compost?

Air Exchange - Does it need any? The tupperware bowl will be air tight.

Light - Does this affect the colonization in any way?

Thanks for any insight you guys can give!

It should be fine to incubate at room temperature, however, when you fruit it I would try to lower the temperature a little.

Moisture I can't answer, but from what I know about those guys it should be fine when it comes in the mail.

Air exchange...It needs it, but very very little. I like to open up the top like once a day for air excahnge...Not all that important though.

Light...You don't want any during colinization.

1) Room temperature for incubation is fine.

2) Field capacity is all you need for colonization. (Misting is for fruiting.)

3) Your mycelium needs gas exchange (GE). Air tight is bad.

4) No, unless you get premature pinning.

5) Read this: http://www.shroomery.org/4/Grow-Mushrooms

So maybe drill a few holes on the top of the lid and cover them with cloth tape? I'd hate to leave it open to air without some sort of filter, then again my mindset is still in the PF Cakes game - is exposing the colonizing compost to air with no filters not putting it at a significant risk?

we like to use 2 breathable materials called tyvek (specific mail envelopes or in painter's jumpsuits) or alternately polyfil (polyester fiber pillow stuffing). These would work.

There a sure-fire place to pick up tyvek? Like walgreens or a post office or somethin? Haven't seen it around before.

If you are in the states goto your local US post office. They have envelopes that are made out of 100% Tyvek. If you aren't get polyfil, or micropore tape.

Just tell the post office people you need them and need to goto your house to fill up with your paper work. Grab 2-3-4 of them.

both will work I think it's the USPS that give tyvek envelopes out for free.

Your local post office has Tyvek envelopes. They are Global Express Guaranteed envelopes.

Please people, DO NOT abuse this, as the end result will end up costing everyone. I know that you may not realize, but us Mycophiles requesting 50+ of these envelopes a month, with no postage to accompany them, could eventually put the kabosh on this great resource. Only take what you need.

You can also go to USPS website and order them and have them delivered right to your door, free of charge.

I've never understood why some people cheep out on tyvek but spend a crazy amount on sub materials even when cheaper alternatives. I just bought a tyvek suit and used the sleeves for my glovebox. You don't really need as much tyvek as people make it sound, I've made plenty of reusable lids with tyvek filters and silicone ports and I'll never really run out of tyvek and have to buy another suit at this rate. I suspect people are just wasteful with it because they don't know better and it's free.

I thought this tyvek stuff was a sticky tape like material.. Would duct tape make a decent air tight seal for the stuff when applied as a filter?

No man they make certain envelopes out of tyvek. I think someone said they also make painting clothes out of it too, so if that's the case you can also get it at a hardware store. Polyfill is the stuff inside pillows.

Ya I get that they make different materials out of tyvek, I am asking if duct tape would work fine to seal the tyvek out of air exchange holes, or if theres a better method at an air tight seal for the stuff

no it's a breathable fabric that does not let moisture out. Thus it allows gas exchange while keeping moisture content right.
