Best Size Jars for Cakes and Casing?

Basically, Im a first time grower and I think I should definitely give cakes a try before casings. So, Im probably going to do cakes once or twice before I move on to casings using WBS, inoculated with clone to LC or agar. I most definitely cannot do WBS casings and bulk growing with 1/2 pint jars. I have never heard of people doing cakes with quarts, so I dont know if its possible. For now the best idea would be wide mouth pint jars, but Im not sure if theres going to be any problems with that while growing bulk. What kind of jars/methods could I use to do both cakes and casings?

Any ideas guys?
Thought I would get some opinions from some growers that have more experience than me.

1/2pt or pint jars are best for cakes imo

and quarts are used for grains but you'll need a PC

Umm, yes, I know that, it's not the problem.
The problem is I want to do both cakes and casings/bulk using only one kind of jar so I don't have to buy separate ones for cakes and casings, and I don't know what size would be the best one size jars to fit both methods.

I've used pint jars for both cakes and to PC wbs but can't recommend that route. you shouldn't be cheap and buy the proper jars for the job. if its a money issue how about skipping the $10 lunch one day of the month? theres your new set of jars right there.

Hm, I mean...would there really be a problem or difference using 1 pint jars rather than quarts for WBS, other than they colonize faster?

the problem I had w/ pint jars and wbs was that the PC times were difficult to judge. Pint jars burst the wbs much easier than quarts. I suppose if you can experiment and find the proper PC time for the size jar, your particular PC, etc then maybe you shouldn't have any problems. Quarts for me are much easier and faster because I don't have to make a million holes in lids, stuff them with poly/tvek etc etc.

I use pint jars for rye grain jars, mainly because my pressure cooker is too small for quart jars.  It seems to get the job done, but I wouldn't do cakes pint jars, too big and wouldn't colonize quick enough before contams got in.

Not a good idea.  Use 1/2pints for cakes.  Pints can cause all sorts of problems, slow colonization among them.

In addition, even pints are too small for grains.  Use quarts for rye, wbs, etc.  That means purchasing more than one size jar.

forgot to add its hard to shake pint jars of grain...quarts are really the sweet spot :heart:

jars of 1/4 or 1/2 pints will do great for cakes. Use bigger for grain. I recommend using 1/4 pint jars for cakes if you're also going to be doing bulks and casings with grains. They are so quick and easy especially to get spore prints, and can get you around 3-4 grams dry on first flush if you keep them hydrated.  1/2 pint cakes have more yield, but since you're going to spawn to bulk and case they really aren't necessary for your overall shroom stash. Grains need pints or quart. I like pint because quarts will not fit in my tiny PC, but you *Have* to pressure cook grains.

Spend an extra couple of bucks and get two sizes, one for cakes one for grains. What do you have to lose you make your money back & then some off one cake anyways.

1/2pint for cakes

casings: same, unless u really want to get bigger, spawn grains to manure, so, grains in pints or quarts. preferably quarts from grain to grain transers.
