How will you be able to tell when the coir is colonized?

You're right on target. The problem with putting a top layer of colonized spawn on there is you'll never know when it's colonized. I'd leave it covered for 10 days to be safe, then case w/ 50/50. 10 days is probably long, but there's just no way to know with that top layer.

It looks pretty good though - I really think you'll be bragging about pinning in a week or two.

A note about late-casing - It can be risky. Once you uncover after colonization, contaminant spores will be landing on the substrate surface. This is normal and the sub can fight them off, but if you let them build up for a few days and then cover them with casing, they'll have a warm, dark, moist environment to flourish. It'll still probably work, but it's a little riskier. Using wax paper until you case could really help by protecting the surface from many contams and providing 100% rh.

this looks ready to fan now, though i have had coir tubs look like that, later to be reveled it looking like a layer cake. i would agree with powerofthecoir and say let it sit for a few days after it looks fully colonized. also don't forget to fan shrooms need FAE
