misting and overlay question
    #868303 - 09/07/02 07:12 AM (15 years, 9 months ago)

It seems that when I mist my casings it leads to matting. The mycelia looses its fluffy goodness. I have tried dripping water into the casing between spots that have poked thru and that seems to help. If misting leads to matting why does everyone mist their casings?

Am I doing something wrong when I mist?

You shouldn?t have much mycelium growing on the casing surface, ideally none at all.
If you have none, then misting can?t cause the matting.

sorry to be dense, but I thought that we want to have a good percentage of the surface poked thru to get an even pin set. And that was the sign to initiate pinning? I have seen the pictures of overlay. Are these pictures typically extreem cases (like the pictures of successful grows but not minor ones)? I thought we want to rhyzo growth that stands up 1/4 inch about the top of casing. This is what is getting knocked down.

I have read the grow logs where people mist all the way up to harvest. Are you not considering the growth into the casing mycelium?

Poked through, sure, but not colonized.
