Fruiting chamber concerns with casing
    #8681143 - 07/25/08 05:05 PM (16 years, 5 months ago)

Hey, thanks for the help so far guys, Ive got a couple of terrariums set up with some BRF cakes.  But for the casing I had a concern about the fruiting chamber.  Im doing the coco coir method where you end up with your casing in aluminum baking trays, which I suppose would sit on the perlite.  My concern is that I have SO MUCH material that I envision myself filling up the bottom of the tupperware container which would stop the water from evaporating from the perlite correctly.  Should I be worried about this?  If so , is there a good workaround?

You do not case cakes.

To be honest, I'm surprised that you have successfully grown mycelium without knowing this. Congratulations!

Ive packed trays pretty tightly together on perlite without a problem. Just make sure that there's at least some space for circulation and have some holes under the perlite. The updraft of humid air will get around the trays.

Find a rack of some kind. You can use one of those wire mesh "inbox" "outbox" types from an office supply store or walmart.

You can case cakes...

Cruble and cake? Works great.

But yeah, you don't case regular cakes. Just donk and rule.

He never said he was casing cakes.  Read the post.

Simply elevate the trays above the perlite with spacers or a wire rack as previously suggested.  Keep the surface of the perlite open.

I know this sounds weird, but I use to take nylon stockings and fill them with perlite, wet them, knot the ends and then hang them off of the lid with the knots from each end pushed through holes in lid. You can hang them in a martha too for extra humidity.

It works very well and is a clean process. You can change them out easily.
