i like to be precise, i want to use a pernament marker to mark off the level of myc and level of caseing in my foil tray, will the ink efffect the myc in any way?

one more thing, why do people recommend using at least 4inch deep trays?

Maximum 4" deep, unless you are experienced and using a deliberate technique to go thicker. Around 4" is when you start to have to worry about the bottom going anaerobic and creating a bacterial bloom.

Thinner casings are fine - many people like to stay in the 2-3" range. Two 2" trays will outperform the same amount of substrate in one 4" tray. It's really just a matter of what your limiting factor is. If you have lots of room but limited substrate, you will do best with thinner subs. If you have limited room but plenty of substrate, go thick. Thick casings do tend to produce larger fruits.

I've used a sharpie to mark the inside of trays many times with no problems. I don't want to flat out say it's safe, but I've never had a problem nor have I read of a problem.

Markers are fine, but you shouldn't use aluminum trays.  After a flush or two, they look like this.

Is there a tek for making self-draining trays like that? I bet that would keep mist water from building up at the bottom of a tray and encouraging contamination.
