Just starting out-Fruiting Chamber concept, and some questions about casing
    #8677885 - 07/24/08 08:59 PM (16 years, 5 months ago)

So I’m new to growing and I’m just trying to soak up some information and put together some ideas for how I’m going to do my first grow.

I was thinking of starting out with a couple grow bags, since that seems to be a pretty simple and straightforward method for colonizing substrate.  I’m planning to use a fruiting container with a couple inches of perlite on the bottom, with filtered holes a couple inches above the level of the perlite to allow for the CO2 to escape.  For humidification and fresh air exchange I was planning on using and use the “bubbleh” design for a humidifier, along with an air pump in a HEPA filtered container, which would pump fresh, filtered, and humid air through the top of the container.  I’ve drawn up some designs on paper and it seems like it would be a pretty well functioning system that offers automated FAE and humidification, while keeping the fruiting chamber free of contaminants.  Do you experienced growers think that this is a good design for a fruiting chamber?

Now I know its not recommended for first timers, but I want to go ahead and case the first time, which I was planning on doing using store bought jiffy mix.  One thing I haven’t been able to understand from the various TEKs and FAQs on here is what you do with a casing after the first flush has been harvested.  I know you’re supposed to dunk cakes between flushes, but what about casings?  Do you replace the casing layer with fresh, moistened casing mix, or do you dunk the substrate somehow?

You are doing significant overkill for a tub.  Tubs are supposed to be easy set it and forget it ops.  Look up RR's Shotgun FC if you want to use perlite like you said.  Or case end to end via monotubs.  You are trying to combine these two concepts and add a bunch of unnecessary automation.  Once the substrate is colonized you don't need to be sterile anymore.  Just clean.  My FC is a greenhouse with the doors unzipped and a coolmist hooked up.  That's it.

As far as casing goes once you harvest you will have divots from the removed fruits.  Fill those in with field capacity casing mix.  Then lightly mist many different times over a few days until the casing moisture is just right.  Glistening with moisture but not over saturated.  Takes some time to get it down.  The first day is most important for getting moisture back up to par.

As far as dunking goes you can do this but if you do I'd opt out on the casing mix.  When you dunk with the casing mix the water gets all murky and the casing layer can end up holding on to too much moisture later.  Really just a big mess.  Me personally I prefer to case and not dunk.  I use large trays that are four inches thick.  They are very awkward and difficult to get the whole tray out to soak without breaking it up.

If you do dunk then skip the casing layer and look up how to use wax paper as a substitute casing layer and make sure that your trays are not unmanageable and will be easy to dunk.

Good luck.

I was worried that it was a little too complicated.  I won't be able to get started on this for a couple of weeks, but I think that when I do I'll go ahead and give the monotub a try. Anyway thanks for the advice.

Buy a 54qt mono tub, drill some 2" holes in it then dump some horse shit and colonized bird seed in there and then you'll be breaking laws in no time flat!

Or you could take this guys word for it, http://www.shroomery.org/forums/showflat.php/Number/8231041#8231041

Haha, and you will one day get to the point when you're helping someone move or you're helping out at your moms house  or something and she has some non-modded rubbermaid tubs filled with old afghans or books and you'll say "momma, where do you want me to put the mono tubs? In the bedroom?"

Thats exactly what I plan on doing, some of the pictures of monotub grows in the logs are just stunning!

Once you find out how easy it is to grow mush you'll feel embarASSed to think back on how you wanted to do all these crazy things with some hi-tek fruiting chamber.

B4 I found out spawn wasn't only a faggy comic book character I too made up some retarded ideas to house cooked horse shit and bird seed.

Getting plenty of FAE, alkalizing casing layer mix to 8-8.5, and using pasteurization where appropriate will do far more to prevent contamination then trying to HEPA filter the intake air. Fully colonized substrate is very contam resistant IF you keep environment favorable to the mycellium. You'll notice that most of the really awesome grows you see posted weren't fruited in especially sterile conditions. They all have their humidity and FAE nailed though.

If you feel confident with casing, go for it. Just be prepared to do A LOT of research. Cakes have several coherant, proven start-to-finish teks. Other growing techniques require you to put together a whole jigsaw of techniques. Many teks won't work together, many give directly conflicting advice, and many more are just old and contain debunked techniques. You have to do a lot of reading and use the hell out of the search engine to make sense of it all.

Listen to Nugjug and look up the Shotgun FC. You don't need an air pump or any other type of device. You get far better results with a tone of holes on all 6 sides and 5" of damp perlite. It's not just easier, it's actually far more productive and less likely to contaminate (contaminants LOVE stale air).
