Don't boil grain. Read more. Look into the Pf Tek if you don't own a Pressure cooker.

simmer grain only to hydrate.
but like he said, if you dont have a PC and it will be your first grow, give pf tek a shot.
edit: i didnt mean you simmer only to hydrate. i meant simmer only. it hydrates your grains
FUCK that keeps comin out wront 2nd edit:
you soak and simmer grains to hydrate and germinate endospores so you can then PC and kill them while having proper water consistency in your grain.
do tryin grain w/out a PC is gonna be a pain in your ass
do u have a PC?

just throw your grains into a cooler full of water and let sit over not. then proceed to washing and p cooking. me personally i have went away from grain due to slow colonization times. I am sure this is because I don't get the moisture just right but that seems hard for me. I have come to love spawning brf cakes to hpoo/coir.
your only going to learn from your mistakes. so go with whatever trust me your next grow will be a little better.
happy sh rooming

your wasting time and effort plain and simple. I has 0 success without a PC. granted i may live in a "high contam" area but as soon as I got a PC all problems were solved. before you waste your time and money get a PC that will do 15 psi.

I'd boil the jars for 90 minutes. Do up a whole set of brf cake jars, at least 10 of them. Fruit 5 or 6 normally, via dunk and roll, then spawn the remainder to a 1:2.5 ratio of coco-coir for a bigger yield, *If* you want to get more. You don't need a pressure cooker for any of that. If you like coir then get some 4oz jars and use just them to spawn to it, they'll colonize about as fast as a grain jar, just smaller but you can do a lot at once. Wait till you have a pressure cooker to mess with grains.

my pc only does 10psi and I've only had contam issues with casing layers, which you aren't supposed to PC anyways. A 20 dollar pc @ walmart.

how about the Simple cubensis tek? The author talks about steam sterilization as an alternate to pressure cooking.
Good luck.

What? Vermiculite and perlite are not substrates. Peat is not a nutritious soil. You can't grow shrooms on any of those.

Go here: http://www.mushroomvideos.com/BRF-Pf-Tek
Watch the videos, start to finish. Several times. Every step shows extremely reliable, extremely low cost techniques that reflect the most current practices. They demonstrate exactly how to use boiling water instead of a pressure cooker. They also show every step you'll need to do after that until it's time to pick. If you copy the terrarium EXACTLY, you'll get maximal results and spend less than most people (including myself the first time) who try to improvise.
Innovation is great, but it's best to master a proven method before experimenting.
Watch videos! Follow directions! Enjoy massive bounty of psychedelic fungal goodness!!!

Yeah 10 psi will work even for grains. They are just sorta small.

If the jars have a shouldered top, you can't make cakes in them. That means if the threads aren't the widest part, it won't work. The cake just plain won't come out. It shrinks a little, but not nearly that much. Wal-Mart and Big Lots both have mason jar clearances right now.
If you search around enough, you will find brown rice flour in your town. Trying to deviate from teks to save money or time always ends up costing more of both to fix the problems you'll create.
